Question Drive shaft coupling Issue on Cayenne

I have found on the board that this is a problem on Cayennes.

In some cases center bearing falls apart.

Is this a problem in early models Cayenne (03-04)?

How much is fixing this on the Dealer, parts and labor?

Thanks!

I had this issue on our 04cs. started driving and car started shaking, but not at all speeds. slow acceleration or fast acceleration did not matter, you never knew when it would start shaking. aftermarket warranty covered the drive shaft.

The Cardan Shaft (drive shaft) on 03/04 models were replaced under warranty a lot of the time very early in their life, a lot went bad due to a design fault. They were not supposed to have gotten into 04 production but did and we saw (mine included) a lot of them go in the early days. The speed dependant low frequency vibration and noise were the main symtoms.

(When trying to describe it to a dealer the word WUMMERING was used. saying it 3 times gives about the right noise and period.)

If not replaced, the word was that it would fail in the middle.

I broke the coupling on my fathers Cayenne S. I went to pull out of a side street and it sounded like the transmission was screwed at first. Sounded absolutely terrible.

At least for me it was very apparent. I am not sure how much labor was, all I know is it was just a few months after the warranty had run out. He was not pleased. :/

I antecedently pulled this joint apart on my s when i was installing the struts. i hyper extended the joint and all the ***** fell out. I rebuilt it myself and took a hole day just to figure it out. the dealer just replaces the whole shaft. pretty easy to install the shaft, though. If you try to tackle it your self i could tell you the steps.

Anybody have a price on labor and the shaft? My father's car may have this problem.

I just had a dealer replace my driveshaft on a 2004 CTT for around $1500 (parts and labor). It was at 91,000 miles.

What irony, this JUST happened to me last week. It cost me $1100 (with a coupon) @ the dealer. I just had the 60K service and had to go back two days later for that issue. They said it's no way to predict when it will happen.

While there is no way to predict exactly when it will happen, you can inspect the rubber bushing, and flex the driveshaft up and down and you can see the rubber starting to crack/split, and typically it isnt long after that. For the DIY'ers, theres a place locally that refurbishes a driveshaft in exchange for your faulty one, I think they get $450 for one.

It strongly is dependent on driving style of the owner of the truck but like the previous poster said around 100K if not sooner. I have seen them anywhere from 40k-110k.
