Actually, the reason that Cayenne wasn't included in the Car & Driver test was that the Cayenne did not place high enough in a previous comparison. From the article:
"Two other contenders might also have tagged along — the Infiniti FX45 and the Porsche Cayenne S — but were left at home for having already been defeated in previous comparos."
It was also a test of SUV "hovering around the $50,000 mark." The CS "hovers" quite a bit above that when comparably equipped to the MDX and others. A base Tiptronic might have fit the test specs, but it wouldn't match the performance stats of the top picks and would have finished mid-pack (at best).
But who cares? C&D have never been particularly fond of the Cayenne anyway. And as good as the new MDX may perform, it is almost unbearably ugly IMHO. The MDX's numerous lumps, creases, weird shapes, super-cluttered interior center stack and that hideous front end beak are total deal-breakers for me. I can't wait for my new "loser" Cayenne to cross the Atlantic.

i like the look of the new MDX - neighbour has a grey and it looks good in that colour.
what i can't take is the interior; they seem to have taken the approach that if 1 swoopy line is cool then 30 of them must be 30 times cooler.
that theory doesn't hold with beer, acid or lines in interiors!
