Buy a used Cayenne S...
I've sat in a used X5 and the whole car sucks. The interior is cheap. The car isn't very capable or durable off road. Other than it's looks, it has nothing going for it.
Personally I'd go buy a toureg before a BMW.

my dad and i just picked up a cayenne GTS today, and it blows away the x5. it sounds WAY better than ANY bmw v8! its a much better looking car too. we also have a 2008 X3 (this is our 3rd one in 18 months as its a great car), but the cayenne is superior in every way.

I bought an X5 for my wife 08 4.8i about 4 months ago. I drove all the SUV's including the GTS, And Turbo Cayenne, the Audi Q7, all the Range Rovers and the Mercedes Suv's as well.
We ended up with the X5, It is a great SUV. Poweful enough to get the job done and pretty good on gas mileage. The payment was easy on the pocket as well. The difference between the Turbo and the X5 is large but most of it has to do with horespower and BIG price!! . I like the interior better in the X5 as well and it's very easy to use all the functions in the SUV. The maintenance is also great. The wifey doesn't need to do 120 to get the groceries!!!
I really enjoy the features of the X5 and I never look back on the purchase. Go for the X5 you will not be dissapointed.

Ice hows the performance handling interior comfort etc like the cayenne? Handles nicely? the x3 we have i am amazed at how fast and well it grips and brakes. Let me know your thoughts
PS the 4.8 in the X5 seems like i could do alot of mods to make it faster

The performance handeling is great. I mean I drive a Porsche Turbo heavily modified and a Bentley GT that has 22's on it and is chipped. I also own an Audi R8 so when I compare those to the X5 it is not fair. But I must say that I had the X5 up to 130 in Palm Springs and the thing handled unreal. It was like I was sitting in a couch at 130!!
Also the accelaration in the X5 4.8 is truly nice. It is quick and in the sport mode feels even quicker. I really like it and as I said earlier I drove all the others.
The X5 is really comfortable. For the money hands down the best value out there. It grips great like you said and the braking is real good for the weight and vehicle that it is.
Yes I am sure you could modify it

Best of luck,
Ice

The X5 is a fantastic vehicle, I have a 2006 4.4 with sport and 19" wheels, it rocks...But I got a 2009 GTS and it is on a different league; at several notches higher. Buy whatever you like the most; can't go wrong with an X5 or a V8 Cayenne.
I've owned two X5 4.4i's, and after spending 6 months in the GTS, I would never contemplate going back. Not to say that I hated my X5's...perfect size for city driving, fast, great handling, and did fair pretty well on some gnarly 4X4 roads, it just doesn't have the solid feeling of the GTS. One huge reason for me, is how the BMW dealers in my area are a ****show. Sure, you get free maintenance, but I spent many years being aggravated taking it in for work, waiting in lines even with an appointment, and now at Porsche, I just roll in and give them my keys.
