Painting Calipers

I will be picking up a gray Cayenne in Los Angeles, and as soon as I get it I would like to paint the calipers yellow and smoke out the tail lights so it won’t be too red. I was quoted $850 plus fluids for powder coating the calipers. This service includes removing and re-installing the calipers, and performing a brake flush. Is this a good deal? I will be driving to Las Vegas then back to Denver. Can anyone here recommend a good paint shop near these areas?

Do it yourself pretty easy and turns out great and will save you $850. High temp engine enamel paint by dupli color comes in a spray can they make it in a hi gloss yellow.

That is actually a decent price. Its a LOT of work. Check my tutorial here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...s-painted.html to see what's involved.

Just swap paint with powdercoating - its basically the same labor sans spraying the powder and baking.

It sure does look like a lot of work. Honestly, I would be hesitant to do this job considering I don't know a whole lot about cars.

Just follow this guide.

Buy some Caliper Spray Paint ,Duplicolor or VHT will do just fine .Then I take 1 wheel off at a time and I take my time and Mask away after covering the car with a car cover or painters blanket ( $6.00 at home depot) THE KEY to sucess here is the Masking off ,its really not that hard ,Cover the entire wheel well area with newspaper as to not get overspray everywhere, spray the caliper with caliper Cleaner you get at the auto store. let dry and paint away ,try not to paint too close and drip just 3 thin coats 3 minutes apart ,let stand for 10 minutes and remove all the masking ,Put the wheel back on and go to the next wheeel and repeat.after you are all done wait a couple hours then use your Caliper stickers you get on E-bay for $7.00 in any color you desire and carefully line them up and install .they give you 6 so if you mess up you can try again .This is EASY IMO and mine look just as good as FACTORY in my opinion. They may fade a bit in a yr or two but just respray them and apply new stickers,no biggie.

I'm surprised there's not a place in Denver that can do that for you. I've actually been meaning to research this because the red calipers on my 911 could use a refinishing job.

Did you ever find another Paint Shop in LA? I am looking to do the exact same thing to a Gray Cayenne. What shop did you go to for the $850 quote? Will any shops Paint without removing the Calipers like some of the members have done?

While off the shelf paints aer easy to apply there is a TON of work that needs to go into them as stated. Painting is only a fraction of the effort...

I took my time and painted some calipers on my M5 a while back and it turned out great, I did all the right prep, waiting, coating, etc but it still flaked, chipped, etc.

IMO if would be worth it to get it done professionally and done right. Especially with yellow as I could see that fading if the right paints and procedures aren't applied.

We do the refinishing work here, just 5-min out of LA, when we first started refinishing calipers more than 5-years back we tested both PC and a hard baked finish, we saw many draw backs from PC; 1) not recommended by Brembos US distributor 2) Too thick and can contribute to heat containment. 3) spider-cracked under track testing

Check us out: www.fastforwardwheels.com

we have showroom samples

I tried to send you a private message but it didn't go through since I'm still a newbie

So I got another quote for less than $300 for painting (not powder coating) the calipers and they could get it done in 3 hours instead of days. So my question now is is it worth the extra couple hundred dollars to go with the powder coating or is painting the calipers just as good as powder coating as long as it's done by professionals?

I would go with hi-temp paint instead of powder coating. Its simpler and have the same visual effect. It is not as complex as one imagine and many DIYs have done this, check the other car forums. Have fun !
