2005 Cayenne S

Test drove an '05 Cayenne S today. It has 47,000 miles, recent service/inspection at dealer. Only issue is an aftermarket radio/nav/Bluetooth unit. Appears to be in good condition.
Any "bewares" for this particular model & year?

Thank You

I have this same model but with 42,000 miles.

Coolant tubes

Coils

Those are two main issues I am aware of with this vehicle.

I have had mine for 3 months and still learning. I too have after market nav system. With this I have no steering wheel controls.

What are they asking?

I saw posts about coolant tubes but no way to know if you should replace them. Seems some have no trouble?
This unit will work with steering wheel controls except for the mute button.
$28k

From a poll I ran on another Cayenne website - it appears about 30% or less have problems with the coolant pipes. It may be a more frequent problem with turbo models (higher temps in the engine compartment.)

Aftermarket nav isn't necessarily a disadvantage since it has bluetoof, and the map updates are likely much more reasonably priced then Porsche's prices ($300+ on a good day..) The only really nice thing on most factory nav equipped models is a lot came with the Bose audio system, which is about the most impressive car audio I've ever heard.

Coils are a problem - but easily rectified (just costs $$$)

Also - there are some (not endemic - but known on some trucks..) problems with the driveshaft assembly. Dealer only sells the entire driveshaft and charges an arm/leg to replace (figure $1200-1700 for the job.) The problem part is the center bearing and that IS replaceable for a moderately skilled DIY'er for about $100. There are also companies rebuilding the driveshafts for way less then 1/2 the cost of a new one. Figure 2 hours of an honest mechanic's time to replace it.

I bought coils at pelican parts. I think they are about $35 each (I can't recall). If you are changing coils you should also change plugs. This is a DIY. I did 1/2 last weekend, it took about 45 minutes. I need to do the passenger side next weekend, this side is a little harder cause there is an extra part u have to undo to access plugs/coils.

The price of $28k seems high to me. What is the truck equipped with? I think you should target KBB trade in value in good to excellent range as a purchase price.

Just for reference - NAPA (professional auto parts places - where your mechanic buys parts) has an Echlin replacement coil for $20 for the V8 engines. I've been thinking of buying a few and tossing them in the spare-tire well so I can invoke Eilenberger's Law of Spares (You never need what you have..) While Echlin isn't a German brand - how much worse can they be then the ones Porsche sells?

Awesome mileage on an 05 Cayenne....I purchased mine with 62,000. Also had the coil issue on my 05 a few months ago & Porsche dealer replaced mine at no charge. Check with your local dealer before replacing & make sure they need to be replaced......Previous owner may have already had them replaced.

After market navi......I wish I had one. It would make adding rear backup camera a breeze and updating maps more economical vs Porsche update @ $395 +.

I just picked up an 04 with 25k mi (26k now that i've had it for 2 months) so I understand the urge to get it with such low miles. In doing the same type of research you are doing, I looked at the standard maintenance schedule. One thing that stuck out to me was the brake fluid flush. I think it's done every 20k miles? And the dealer told me they need brakes every 12-15k but I haven't gotten there yet to tell if its accurate or not

Brake fluid is every 2 years from date of production of the vehicle. And I hope they don't need brakes every 12-15k.. that could get to be expensive (I usually get 60-80,000 miles out of brakes on my BMWs..)

i didn't believe it either but I'm not there yet to be able to confirm. But i really have only driven cars, not SUVs. Then again this a dealer service rep who i'm sure was looking to sell service to me. And driving habits are everything when it comes to brakes.what kind of BMWs? Because of similar weight, I think this would follow a similar path as an v8 X5 regarding brake life. Our 530i gets great brake life like my a4

People are paying to replace coils? Wasn't there a thread that Porsche was doing this for free now?
