Another DIY.. Adding a second screen

Finals are over so I finally finished this little project. I added a 5" LCD screen on the dash to view my iPhone for the Torque app and to double as a backup camera. Best app I found for streaming OBD information is "Engine Link" for iphones.

I did not want to drill any holes, so I ran the wire between the dash and the A pillar down into the fuse box.

I tapped into the fuse box so the camera receiver and screen will be on a 1 amp fuse. They will also turn on when the car is on.

I ran an iPhone to AV cable into the console and fed it up to the fuse box. This way I can leave my phone in the console compartment and view it on the dash screen.

The glove box had to come out to remove the panel next to the radio and feed the wires through. I ran the usb wire that will charge the phone down to the power ports under the glovebox.

I did not want to hardwire the usb since the powerport to usb adapters usually die out after a year. It is completely unnoticeable unless you look under the glovebox.

Replacement screen arrived and is now installed.

For the camera's power, I wired it to the reverse light and ran the wire down to the steel rear bumper where the camera itself is mounted.

I ask this because I'm sure it was thought of -Wouldn't it have bee much easier to have a new radio/CD/Nav/Back up camera system in a double DIN install?

I went this route for a few reasons.

I wanted to be able to see it without looking away from the road. As of now, its in my peripheral vision, a slight glance rather than look down at the radio. I also wanted to keep my radio accessible without having to switch screens/modes. With my phone connected, I can see who is calling, texts, navigation, etc, and use Siri to control it. Once again, I wont have to look down at the radio or the phone itself. Lastly, the small screen and camera I am installing is extremely cheap compared to a whole new radio system. $49 free shipping is practically free compared to the Pioneer system I put in my mom's car.

Updated for those interested. Just waiting on the screen which will be an easy 2 seconds to plug in.

Are you concerned at all about theft? I would hate for someone to break my expensive front door window (guessing $600 and up) for a relatively cheap HUD in plain display. Lets hope you have the free glass rider on your auto insurance, then this would be less of a concern.

Thankfully I live in an area where theft is very uncommon. But any time I am in different towns, its something I think about. Cayennes are targeted for theft just for the fact that its a Porsche, same with range rovers and other high end vehicles. Just a few weeks ago, a cayenne and range rover were both broken into at a mall not too far from me. Many people have dash mounted navigation systems so I don't see myself as a higher target, but the concern has always been there.
