custom exhaust
Hey guys, I have a simple question for ya:
I am from Jacksonville FL, and my father is a Porsche Dealer. Like I stated in another post, I just got an 04 Cayenne S, and I want to do some exhaust work to it. Around here we have done plenty of exhaust work, including removing 2 catalytic converters, and also we have done one straight pipe set, BUT this was all on Cayenne Turbos. None of them we have done have been obnoxiously loud, and I like that. The rear muffler delete on the Cayenne Turbo we recently did sounded AMAZING, and attracted attention from all three dealerships as we tested it in the back parking lot. I am just worried that if I do the Catalytic converter delete on my S, it will not be louder at all, but if I do the Rear muffler delete, it would be too loud, as NA cars tend to be louder than Turbo Cars. I am trying to do this without spending an a$$load of money, as I may be getting into a turbo cayenne quite soon, so I was just wondering if anyone has any information for something like this. And if I should do a. Cat delet, b, Muffler Delete, c. Nothing!! Thanks in advance!

Isn't there a factory installed option on 911 carrera's and turbos to turn on the extra exhaust sound or turn it off with the push of a button? Couldn't you just do that to the cayenne? If anyone has information on an aftermarket product like that i would be interested.
Yes, they have that factory option. My dads previous 996 Had it, and as did his C4S. I dont think they have it for a cayenne, but if they did, that would be a definite option! Nice thinkin!
I would reccomend straight piping the exhaust out of the two options. Modern day cats are not that restrictive in most cars and are required by US law. You would definately notice more sound and performance out of changing the mufflers IMHO.
I like option "C". nothing. If you are going to trade for a Cay TT shortly, why bother. Think of all your neighbors in Jax Beach/ Ponte Vedra complaining about the noise.
Also think about the resale value!

My S has had the 2 secondary cats removed. Sounds much better and great power increase.
Cayenne S with Bypass Pipes by Fabspeed, my recording.

yea I agree, if you are getting the TT why bother about the S? Save your money to upgrade the TT's exhaust

well, i would change it only based on the fact that the Cayenne TT is still only a maybe. It all depends if I sell my other car, which BTW is in the classifieds right now on this site, in case anyone wants it or knows someone that would
Anyways, thanks to all of you for your opinions as I still dont know what to do. I talked to my service advisor today, and he seems to think that I should have the piping shop do the rear muffler delete, but with some small Tri-flo mufflers to quiet it down a bit, or maybe even some Borlas, who knows. I can get that done for only about 150 dollars more than just the rear muffler delete.
Mike, as far as your truck goes, I think that it sounds awesome!!!!! I have a few questions for you...Is it noticeable louder while driving? and is it noticeably louder from the front of your Cayenne. With all the cayennes I have heard, it seems that they are VERY quiet from the drivers seat and from the front of the vehicle, but sound very beefy from the back end, and while passing a car on throttle. I think you set the microphone down by the rear exhausts, because i think I hear you pick it up, but either way, very badass. Just wondering the actual notice in sound from the drivers seat! Also, how much performance are you talking as far as the increase goes? TIA man!

renntech,
Fabspeed claims HP will increase by 15 when installing the 2ndry bypass. However I saw a complaint on either rennlist.com or 6speedonline.com that someone installed the fabspeed bypass, however he felt that he lost power. So he switched the fabspeed bypass to the stock catalyics and he gained the power he lost. I dont know whether this is true or no. I find it hard to believe since fabspeed claims they did dyno on the bypass.

You are correct, I put my DV Camera down to the rear of the car although out to the side.
The sound in the car is only noticable under hard driving otherwise its still quiet. Outside the car it sounds somewhat like a chevy big block with straight pipes, sort of burbling, it sounds like a huge engine.
Jamy I spoke to someone last night who had his S dyno'ed with the same configuration I have, BMC Filters and the Cat Bypass, his results were 24hp and 21ft Ilbs increase.
I have still not had the time to get mine done but I might after hearing that.
I think for the price its the max bang for the buck. But hey its only money right.
On the other hand if your a TT driver the noise is somewhat muffled by the blowers to start with and straight pipes may be the way to go. Jeffrey Behr out west had his TT done and by all accounts it sounds great without any other sound control down stream.
