CTTS Woes
From what I understand they do a check at the factory in Germany to make sure the vehicle was built to spec, nothing is leaking, nothing is shorting out, etc... Pack the lot onto a boat without the batteries connected and after draining out all the fuel. Once the vehicles arrive at the port they refuel them, reconnect the batteries and drive them off the boat. They randomly pull one or two cars aside to make sure the travel across the ocean didn't affect the entire lot. They check for rust, condensation making sure none of the cars got bumped together in rough seas and a slew of other things.
Regarding the boat, my understanding is they drive the cars on the boat and drive them off, no draining of fuel or disconnecting batteries. Not sure however. The factory told me after my Europe tour to not bring the car back full tank just because gas was cheaper in the US so I assume they don't drain it. My dealer filled it up regardless when I took delivery so that was good advise for another reason

I think the random inspection on the boat might be customs to check for "stuff" in the car that might not be on the manifest

Made it just fine
Thought of including a few cases of wine as well, but decided not to push it
I was told that as long as what was in the trunk did not rise above head rests you would be ok
