Why & How the 20 HP Difference between the Cayenne S and GTS?

Can someone with the technical know how please explain to me how the GTS has 20 more hp (420) versus (400) for the Cayenne S V8? It appears to be the same motor, so is this achieved through tuning alone?

I see the final drive ratio is different on the GTS, which can make a car feel more responsive, but that appears to be it, right?

Here are the comparative specs from Porsche.

http://press.porsche.com/vehicles/20...pecs_w_GTS.pdf

After scouring the web I can’t seem to locate any definitive info as to how the extra 20hp is achieved?

My question then is, if there is 20hp available to tap, how can we (S owners) tap into it?

Thanks.

Not that this article is gospel by any means, but it did get me thinking about tuning the NA engine. Seems Dinan firmly believes that gains are nearly impossible with a remap.

What does the group think, or experience? I know there are a couple tuners out there claiming they can do a NA tune, but I'm starting to think tuning a NA engine is hogwash.

There has to be some form of mechanical upgrade (cam, throttle, intake, etc.).

no it's more than just the tuning..

"The heart of the GTS is the same 4.8-liter V-8 engine from the Cayenne S, but upgraded by 20 hp and 12 lb-ft of torque to 420 hp and 381 lb-ft. The power increase comes courtesy of a more aggressive intake camshaft, stronger valve springs, and a reprogrammed engine computer. "

and then there's the aggressive shorter gear ratios, the sport exhaust, all these only make the GTS 0.2s faster than the S, so don't even bother, you are not getting a detuned engine from the S

In a vehicle weighing as much as ours, 20hp is fairly insignificant. To notice a difference you need more tq, shorter gearing, lighter wheels and/or internal engine/tuning mods.

change air filters, delete 2nd cats, install cat back and send in your ecu to get programmed. All that will = more than 20 hp

Would love to hear from those who have driven both the GTS and S - is there that much of a noticeable difference and in what way?

Well for me it was more about converting to quad tips, cleaning up the rasp and increasing the exhaust note. The small HP and weight advantages are just a bonus.

The GTS does look a lot cleaner and sexier than the S with the Aerokit and 21's.

Avman, i drove the previous generation GTS vs S and they were like night and day. It was mostly due to the suspension feel and sound. Straight line performance was negligible...but if given keys to both and could only keep one, it would've been the GTS in my garage.

Having driven and now owning a 2011 Cayenne S with 20" Spyder design wheels, i'm not lacking for looks or performance...though i'd love to hear the GTS exhaust in person
