How to pry off overhead / rearview mirror for radar hard wiring?

How does this piece come off? And the rest of the overhead console? 2016 Cayenne S.

Which portion could I hardwire a radar detector into? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Don't know how to pop it loose, but it's pretty easy to run a wire down either side to the fuse panels. Left side has the fuse for that mirror, which comes on with the ignition being started.

Thanks for the advice!

In looking in the manual, it says the fuse box is under the hood in my 2016 Cayenne.

Is the box at the door you speak of an auxiliary box? I couldn't find it in the manual. I didn't see any place designed to pry.

Iff there's a fuse there, would I simply run the leads into it and share it with the side view mirror or is there an empty spot in the fuse box there?

Thanks so much!

Open drivers door. Look at the left END of the dash. There is a plastic panel there. It will pop out using a coin. It will reveal one of two fuseboxes that are at the two ends of the dash. There are many fuses there, and even some positions that have + power for the fuse (some switched, some unswitched) meant for accessories your vehicle doesn't have - that can be used for other purposes. You just need a way to attach the power lead to the other leg of the fuse (I usually solder them - but I realize that's beyond most people's abilities.)

BTW - these are shown in your owners manual.

Got it. And found it in the manual. Thanks

You're right, the wire run would be easy.

Last thing, how do I wire into fuse box? I'm not a solder guy so how would I get the leads into the fuse box? Do I pick an empty fuse space or share one?

Thanks! It's like doing surgery. Thanks for all the help. .

Ideally - one could purchase the connector used in the fuse box and attach a wire to it, then pick one of the empty spaces where there is a + connection already and use that space.

Unfortunately - I've never been able to located the needed connector. It should be sold as a "repair part" for the electrical system - but it would take a savvy parts guy to actually locate it. It would likely come with a pigtail wire attached already.

I thought about trying to locate a wrecked Cayenne and strip out some of the connectors from the fuse box - but when I've talked to the wrecking yards specializing in Porsche - they sound like they think I'm crazy. I've also thought it might be worth checking for a wrecked Tourag - since the bodies are both made in the same Czech factory - in the hopes the connector was used on both, but inertia of the *** has prevented that happening.

Other possibilities are a "tap a fuse" sort of thingie. http://a.co/9Lap9md - probably the easiest way. Make sure if you order this that it's for the right size spade fuse. There are several different sizes. This sort of thing is usually also available at your friendly big-box-auto-parts and chrome crappola stores.

I powered my cell phone cradle off the fuse for the mirror, in the left panel. I powered my dashcam off the same circuit as the accessory sockets, off the right panel. In both situations I used an add-a-circuit. I replaced the fuses they came with for 3A. Best to use as low a fuse rating as possible. Better to have a fuse blow than a circuit overheat and set the car on fire.

958 S is infamous around these parts
I have used something like these before. They allow you to not cut or splice, just be sure to use a a lot that has enough extra amp capacity. It allows you to keep your original fuse and add a second one (within reason) or you can use these in a fuse slot that is powered but not being used.

Thanks all

Got it. I have many empty (and I assume powered) fuses in my left side door box - the many empty slots are for the Cayenne Hybrid. I may just plug into one of them that powers on when car is on.

Most of the empty slots (3rd row in picture above) are Cayenne Hybrid fuses - all 5 amp. I assume these will work fine?

Thanks!

Do not just pick something at random. Read the manual, it lists which fuses power what circuits. Do not assume anything, KNOW which one you're using.

In my '17, the left side fuse panel has a circuit for the mirror, since you were planning on tapping in there that would seem like a reasonable option to consider. Just remember not to change any existing fuses to anything greater than what's already present. There's a number on the fuse, don't go higher than that. If anything, put a lower rated fuse in the additive position. Better safe than stuck on the side of the road while the dash burns.

And the empty slots aren't going to work if they have no connector/socket in them. SOME empty ones may have a powered feed going to them - they'll have the silver colored socket in one side of the slot. It looks from your photo as if most of those don't. And some of the slots that DO have a connector in them may be switched on with the ignition, or always on connections. I'd suspect you would want one that is switched on with the ignition.

Of course! These are my options on the left side panel - don't see a side view mirror option:
You can see many diesel options

If not the empty Cayenne S diesel empty slots (if they are nudeed unpowered), which looks best? #53?

Thanks all!

I wouldn't go anywhere near #53. If the steering column module craps out - you're looking at a VERY expensive and time consuming job involving replacing the entire column.

#44 would be switched if you have vented seats. #13 - would be switched and is unlikely to be effected by anything you plug into it.

I have vented seats - and it's only 7.5 amps - compared to the 30 amp sub - I think #13 is the one.

Thanks for the help!

I'm going to use the Escort Smart Switch:

As Douglas Adams wrote, the answer is 42. Now we know what the question was!

If I'm not mistaken that's the circuit for the mirror that's on the inside of the car, the one up there on the center ceiling console.
