Trailer Hitch Module Programming - Needed?

I just did a retro-fit of an OEM hitch and latest module (7P0-907-383-J) on my 2014 Cayenne. I plugged in a tow hitch electrical tester... but since the module was not "programmed" by the dealer yet, I was somewhat surprised when the test LED's lit up.

The tester lights indicated my actuation of running lights and both turn signals was functioning properly. I was alone, so could not test brake light operation.

My question is... does this mean I don't need to go to the dealer and get them to "program" in the module?

Or, might I get to Uhaul, ready to rent a trailer and leave on my trip, only then to find the trailer lights don't work...??

Thanks for any input!

Hello gt3'er,

I am also interested in installing a retrofit OEM hitch on my 2014 Porsche Cayenne. I am very curious to learn if the programming is necessary. How has the towing experience been so far? Did you figure out if the brake lights are operating correctly? I am also curious to whether your current setup engages the trailer brakes?

I really hope that the trailer module is more of a plug and play. I don't want to deal with dealership rip off. I was quoted 3500$ for installing hitch on my Cayenne.

I would really appreciate any input on this. Thanks again,

Ammar

Hi gt3'er again,

After doing some of my own research, I learned that if you have installed a used trailer module, you likely would not need programming because it should have been already programmed. If it is new, then likely you will need to have it programmed. I don't claim to have the expertise in this but found a thread online that mentioned that.

I called my dealer today and they explained to me that the function of the trailer module is mostly to put the car in "trailing mode". That apparently would cause the car to change shifting and other driving characteristics. Based on the service person I spoke with, it has less to do with the trailer functions...etc and more with the car recognizing that you are towing.

They quoted me $1500 for full installation of the OEM hitch if I supply them with the OEM part. They quoted me $250 for the trailer module programming.

I think I will most likely buy the part and install it, then take it to dealer for the programming only.

If you could kindly just provide me with how you made the wiring connects between the hitch wire connector, the trailer module, and the car wiring; I would appreciate it greatly!

Thanks,

Ammar

Ammar, this link provides a pdf with instructions I used to install and connect the module. No cutting/splicing...

I put a VW module in mine and it seemed to work fine without programming. However I understand that the rear hatch release should be disabled when a trailer is connected. I'm able to open my hatch via the button, so run the risk of damaging it against the trailer. Programming it may fix this--not sure what else it may accomplish.
