Claying The Windows

Is there any use of doing this? Any advantages? Disadvantages?

What about waxing the windows as well? Advantages? Disadvantages?

Excellent question. You can absolutely clay the glass surfaces and we do it all the time on our higher-end details. Think about it...all the contaminants on the paint are also on the glass. So cleaning the glass will make the surface smooth, easier to clean, and a bit more clear since there isn't a film of gunk on them. You'd be surprised how much stuff is on the rear glass and winshield.

As for polishing and waxing, no need to wax, but a good glass polishing will further clean the glass and will take out fine surface scratches or hazing.

How do you polish the glass and what product do you use?

Use a machine polisher, a 'hard' foam pad and Autoglym Glass Polish. I would also suggest applying a polymer to the glasss surfaces when finished

I have some Griot's Garage window clay, but I have yet to use it. I bought it to use on my 87 Benz, but after trying some AutoGlym glass polish, I discovered that using such products on a 22 year old windscreen is not advisable -- the polish got into every pit and pore in the glass, and it took a lot of window cleaner and elbow grease with a microfiber to get it all out. Suddenly I could see the 100's of tiny pits that had been invisible until the polish was applied. For the older cars, I'll only use window cleaner. The glass clay and glass polish will be for my newer cars; where the windscreens have not yet taken such a beating.

Thank you Moe - is clay that can be used on the car, the same clay that is to be used on the windshield, or should a different clay be used?

Lastly, what about claying headlights and taillights which are usually plastic?

Thanks again

Yes...same clay used on paint can be used on the glass.

We clay the lights as well...just make sure to use a good quality clay that isn't too aggressive.

Here's what we use:
