Hello fellow members,

I drive a 996 GT3 and I need some new track tires for this season. I ran MPSC (stock size) last season and liked them allot. I already tried the R888 (245/315) and did not like them, I felt like they reduced my pull out of turns.

I want tires that have better grip with similar longevity.

Car is stock besides a proper alignment and turned 2:10 at VIR, 2:12 at The Glen, and 1:43 at Mid Ohio on MPSC.

Maybe some of the race teams have used tires that still have life on them that I can use. Maybe some of you guys have to many track tires around and want to sell them.

Looking for advice on tire choices to lower my lap times. I want to get lower lap times with tires and experience before I do anything to the suspension of the car.

Thank you for your help,
Adam

the Pirelli Corsa's were popular a few years back, but they are only offered in the "system" at Tire Rack now on closeout. You might check with Damon to see if they would be an improvement on the MPSC.

But, if you want to lower your lap times, probably Hoosiers are your best bet. Not good for street, though, so you will need wheels.

I did not see a 295 size on the Nitto website.

As an option we generally have used Toyo RA-1 's from our World Challenge WC- 996 GT3 program.

They are in great condition and about the half the cost of new tires.

Adam - Since you trailer to events, hoosiers are the ticket without a doubt!

Hoosiers R6, those are the ticket to better lap times. They are essentially a slick tire. Treadwear is either 40 or 0 as I recall.
Plenty of choices in 19" size.

I am running 235/40/18 in the front and 295/30/18 in the rear. I would like to stick with the factory sizes.

Thanks to everyone for your input so far.

Hi Adam,
I run 18 inch track tires on my 997 GT3. If you want to stick with DOT tires the Hoosier R6’s are the fastest of the bunch. If you don’t care about DOT tires then dedicated racing slicks are the fast ticket. You have the following choices from least $$ to most $$$$$:
Hoosier, Pirelli, Yokohama and Michelins. There is no free lunch and you usually get what you pay for. You also have a choice of compounds, softer compounds stick better but wear faster, harder compounds do not stick quite as well but wear less.
Good luck and keep the shiny side up.

Stuart,
I normaly run R6 Hoosiers, 245/40-18 in front and 315/30-18 on CCW or BBS 18 X 9 front and 18 X 12 rear race wheels and they are a perfect fit. Don’t know anything about the new BFG’s but would be interested to find out more about them.

Life of tires?
Ok, What is the heat cycle life of the following tires...

Hoosiers
BFG R1
Yokohama

Lasted a year on MPSC w/over 36 heat cycles, 8 auto-x events, and driven on street 3 times a week extremly spirited!

Thanks again,
Adam
