Anybody have a carbon roof on a GT3/RS

Was thinking of a carbon roof upgrade for my new GT3RS that's inbound. Was wondering how "user friendly" it was for a street car. Can the OEM head liner be reinstalled?

Looking at options to drop some weight and have the car stand out from the others. I would guess the weight savings would be 25-30 lbs.

Input welcome

you can get it from getty designs.
however, if you add the headliner back, you wont save much.
the oem lid is alum, pretty light and the CF wt saving will not be felt on street car.

i contemplated it on my race car, MUCH lighter than my 2010 RS. and even on my race car i took the oem lid off to compare with CF lid, i then put the oem back on.

it's much easier and more wt saving if you dump the seats and put CGT shell seat in there.

IMO dollars to donuts it's not worth it.
You want the look (cheap), wrap it with 3M Di-Noc. Do other things to save weight ...
1. C-GT CF seats
2. Aftermarket exhaust w/ side mufflers delete and titanium
3. Lighter wheels
All these things would be far less invasive to your RS. Plus I would trust very few to do such a job. As stated above I would also add GMG. Then I think the list gets thin.

complete waste on a 2011 RS as has no sunroof and uses aluminum roof.

You might compromise the integrity of the car if its in a crash since (install or material).

I agree with ranger... you can save weight so may other places.

I did the carbon roof on my 997S that is a pure track car, but the weight savings came from removing the liner, sunroof, motor and all the junk up there.

BUT... I LIKE THE WAY YOUR THINKING!!!

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I will put this idea on the back of the list. The reward/risk factor sounds like it's way to low.

The exhaust was #1, a euro rear bumper set up #2, wheels #3, then I would say seats #4. After that it gets harder and less streetable, but I have some other fresh ideas to help along the way.

Again, thanks for your input.

I did it in my M3,I used OEM CF roof and this mod is not easy at all,it was good in the M3 since it has steel roof and sunroof so yes I lost good weight from the worth part.
The GT3,s have alum roof so compared with cf weight will not make a big diff and the structural integrity will be compromised.
Like other members said get LW seats, exh, battery or get the 3m roof decal.

Agree with all above. However, if you are still interested, GMG has done installs with very satisfied customers:

http://www.gmgracing.com/porsche_aero.shtml

GMG Carbon Fiber Roof Conversion for 997 and 996 models

GMG introduces its fully carbon replacement roof panel for all 996 and 997 models. This conversion saves upto 45 lbs on sunroof equipped cars and up to 25 lbs of non sunroof cars.
This is a fully functional and fully structural replacement roof panel.
Professional installation is required and available at GMG.

Ya, I'll take a look when I go over to GMG in October. It's still an option, just moving it further down the list of things to do.

It's stripped down because I was also having RS quarters with GT2 rocker panels installed at the same time. Having a GT3 with the mandatory sunroof irritated me to no end, so I decided to change it up. If I had a 997.2 without a sunroof I don't know if I'd go through the trouble. I'll post pics of the completed project later, but the shop did a job that ended up looking like it came from the factory that way.

I sure does look good, but seems like cost would way out weigh any benefit.

The best mods for these cars for the track is solid bushings for the suspension, BUT with a 2011 RS, its basically a race car in street clothes.

Put some 18" BBS whee;s with some sticky rubber and have a blast.... that is all you need.

Sound words and recommendation.
Doing the full RSS suspension components made a real difference in enjoying my 997.1 RS.
Next will be the Guard LSD and R&P. Discussed it with member PJS and he's thrilled. To quote him, "the Porsche LSD sucked".
