Next gen 991 GT3 redline with DFI engine?
One of the addictive qualities of the present Metzger GT3 engine is it's screaming 8500 rpm redline feel and sound. Can someone explain to me how a direct fuel injection engine, like on the next generation 991's, is different and how it may affect redline limit and 'engine feel'?. Are we really losing a 'godlike' engine?
Dfi is just a more efficient method of fuel injection...shouldn't effect a normally aspirated motor except to make it more responsive and more fuel efficient...if the internals are as good redline should not be reduced
No, the car will still be high revving. It's the only way it can survive in racing being as little as it is and they won't likely get competitive torque numbers with such small displacement. As for sound, maybe listen to the 997's with exhaust and imagine them a little throatier.
The Mertzger has been unbelievable, but its old in development, you have to think Porsche have come up with something better to scrap it. I'm sure they've been testing some in live racing somewhere. I hope to see it in the RSR's next year.

Mezger engine expensive?
Hi Maroli. Why do you think the Mezger engine is expensive to build. Like to get your perspective.

Carbon build up in the cylinders, known to rob a lot of power out of the car. Known problems with a lot of the direct injection Audi motors.
'The engine has lightweight titanium con-rods and these alongside the main bearing journals and crankshaft are plasma-nitride hardened. Couple that with dry-sump lubrication and the fact that the engine is massively de-tuned for production (yet still gets the car to 60mph in 3.9s) and you will start to realise why the GT3 is such an incredible machine.'
The post goes on to say that Porsche complains their profit margin is low on the GT3 because of the price of that engine (28k british pounds to replace!)....don't forget it's essentially the block of a Le Mans winning GT1 car
AH. You are only talking about the GT3 variant of the Mezger engine. I have a 2003 Turbo and that engine does not have to exotic materials your are mentioning for sure. Nevertheless, I am thinking the Mezger engine is still the best they have right now. All others seem to have these bean counter induced shortcuts in design / execution that makes those engines less than perfect.
And that could work as long as its reliable. My only concern is that we haven't seen it racing officially yet meaning Porsche aren't wiling to hang their hats on it yet. It has to be a racing motor, so why don't we see it racing yet? It has to at least pass some test of time.
What about this.
As Porsche is now a VW house, they do have access to some awesome hardware and that includes a nippy diesel. Just imagine one could buy a turbo charged 4 cylinder 600 HP engine with 600-700 lbs torque that would live forever... hmm. Now that would be something. Or imagine procuring the Audi Le Mans diesel racing engine. That might be a great surprise.... I am thinking Porsche would like to do a Coup d'Etat and create a new segment in the luxury sports car. No competition, fabulous margins... skyrocketing profits...Just hoping.... I would buy that diesel express for sure :-)
