Thinking of Getting a Track Car
Thinking of Getting a Track Car
Hey Guys
Im thinking picking up a high mileage GT3 or maybe Carrera S to track. I have a RS something doesn't sit right with me trashing my Garage Queen. Ive never tracked before but really would like to start.
Likely I would leave the car stock at first, maybe buy some track wheels and tires and slowly mod it.
Anyone here have a track only GT3 or Carrera S?

Get a BASE (NO Options) Cayman S...09 or newer... Then mod it as you go, eventually turning it into a Cayman Interseries car....Theyre great fun to drive, quite forgiving, and plenty fast around a track for someone who has never tracked a car to be kept happy for a long time!!
this time of year there are quite a few GT3 cup cars for sale, there are even a few on ebay. Maxwell racing has a porsche 997 Grand Am series race car for sale listed on their site for $55K

^^^^^Really????
Are you seriously suggesting that a person with NO track experience buy a cup car? or even a (in this case, worn out beat up) GS car????
I see it WAYYYY TOO OFTEN, especially in PCA, that people buy cars that are WAY faster than they have any business being behind the wheel of, and end up as ****ty drivers as a result!!
The other thing I see way too often is someone buys a slower car (good thing), but has little or no experience, and doesn't go as fast as others, so instead of spending the time and money to become a better DRIVER, they spend money, and make their cars faster, or buy faster cars, and still suck as drivers....
Buy a slower class car, its cheaper to maintain, and spend time and money on coaching, data acquisition, and the knowledge to use it, and become a better driver. its a lot more fulfilling to chase down a ****** in a cup car, in your stock class cayman (believe me, I know), than it is to be mid pack in a bunch of ******* in their cup cars!!

What they said
Miata with SC/Turbo, E36M3, Subie if you want AWD, Honda for FWD. Learn to carry speed through the turns with a momentum car before you start shortening the straights with HP. There is a lot to be said for Cheap Disposable Track Cars. "CDTC" If you want to go the Porsche route then by all means have at it. Older Boxster$$, 993$$$, or 964$$ add some camber and sticky street tires and have at it. Save the mods for later. IMHO of course, YMMV. I will now climb off my soap box and admit I did it all wrong
and probably wouldn't have listened to the advice I just gave.

The great thing about a stock low option Cayman (09 and up), is that its low cost to run, still a VERY cool car, a lot less than a GT3, and can be slowly modded into a real and very fast race car!!!
I think for the OP and what he was considering, this is the best option....
E36 M3 is a great car too, but older and much more susceptible to breaking etc...Its what I started in (as far as race cars go!).

oh come on now cole.... was that your first ever track toy??? if so, i bet you'd be faster than you are, or at the least sooner than you were had you started with something a little more forgiving!!
However with comments like that, you may just prove yourself a ******!!!

LOL. I just had to repeat the comment. Sounded too good. No, it's not my first track toy, but I had about 10 GT3's, so a Spec Boxster wasn't in line with my experience. I danced with the one that brung me. So sayeth the ******.
Spec miata to learn momentum, ive been looking for a dedicated track car myself and I've found a lot of nice miatas for under 20k. 996 stripper would be awesome, but if you put it in a wall it is still going to cost a boat load of mula.
