RMS question

I had my RMS replaced under warranty a year ago. I do not know the exact procedure, but is it necessary to drain all the engine oil out for this type of work?
If the oil is new, I do not want to change it for no reason.
So far had 7k miles on my 997.1RS

Dude, if the oil is a year old, you should replace it, regardless.

Are Porsches the only cars that have such frequent RMS failures?

Are you saying that you had your rms changed out a year ago and it now needs to be done again? That's crazy.

1. change oil now, RMS or not.
2. it's just a seal. most of you guys are way to paranoid. it's a fking seal. change it and done. every part on the car is meant to be used and replaced. my entire suspension, gearbox and engine often get replaced. you can drive like a ***** or you drive it and fix it.

^^^ Maybe they aren't paranoid so much as concerned about the $$$ to change seals frequently? How much does an RMS job cost? Gosh, how often do you replace your engine?

Make no mistake I love mt GT3RS, and not paranoid, but the fact that Porsche say its normal for RMS's to leak frequently and that these cars smoke on start-ups regularly concerns me that the engineering isn't quite what its supposed to be..... or are other cars of this calibre suffer from such ailments?

When there are so many fast machines out there on the track that do not require replacing parts frequently, the RMS design looks sad especially is a cheap car! I am not saying other machines are totally trouble free, but never heard of any of the manufactures ask their customer to live with the fact that it will leak, or provide some get by solution (drive frequently and hope it will not leak again)! Not to mention all the GT3 LSD fail in short mileage, for mine is less than 4k (became open diff). I love my RS, but not liking the factssssssssss from Porsche.
Note: for replacing the RMS, the engine must come out, and I do not think I would like to spend $ keep milking a shop, not a DIY at home. Also, my 997S never leaks, nothing about the boxster engine, just this specific engine design has a high RMS failure rate or Porsche use cheap seal, which I heard of.

What Mooty said

I don't understand how you call a "get by solution" to drive the car frequently and hope it doesn't leak Isn't that what you bought the car for ?

The RMS as already said is just a seal, it has nothing to do with bad engine design just bad seal design. It is basically a diaphragm that works on crankcase pressure. Mine leaked slightly when I first bought the car but after being cleaned up I was told by my Indie to drive it frequently and it hasn't been a problem since.

As for the bit of smoke on start up, get used to it. It's the nature of boxer engine design, some do it and some don't. I used to own worked Subaru WRX's that did exactly the same thing (boxer engine)

Be grateful we don't have an IMS to worry about

I'm learning to live with the leaky RMS and the smokey startups, but I dont buy the fact its "only a seal", if that was the case, then it would have been resolved years ago.

I've had 997 C2S and Subaru's and none have had smokey startups.... so i'm not too sure on the boxter engines either being the problem for smokey starts...

Thankfully the rest of the car is such a delight to drive and experience that you make allowance for some of its short comings, but it definetly isn't a masterpiece in engineering.

It aint perfect............ but definetly ticks the boxes in the fun department...

Mr Chan, you need to drive your car more. The more they are driven the less they issues. Your RS is a nice car, but not a museum shop peace by any stretch, it is designed to drive the corner store, and then to the track, the key is drive it!
