750 Mile confession......a 997 GT3 story
the torture of the break in......
I read through the manual and I belive it recomends 4500 RPM's for 2000 miles.
I will say that it is physically imposible to adhear to this recomendation. I have been doing my best but I have sinned a few times or caught myself needing that exhaust tone to last a little to long.
The car has soo much torque that the early shifts were hurting my neck. The short shiffting has to be as bad for the car as letting it out right. The car does not even like to shift at 4500. Maybe they want you to shift the car early for 2000 miles so you can get use to the huge amounts of power. That recomendation is to break in the driver, not the car, right.!!!
On the way to lunch today I snapped. A perfect oneway off ramp exposed itself. I ran it out in 2nd then 3rd then 4th. 155 when I had to lift.
THIS CAR IS THE FASTEST THING I HAVE EVERY EXPERIENCED.
The consistant pull to 8500 rpms was incredable. The car was so stable It felt like I was going 95. This car is amazing.
After I was done I felt like I had done a very bad thing. Like the Porsche Gods were going to curse me for my actions. Breaking the law of the break in period. This is killing me.
I have made up my mind. the car is officially broken in. The manual says RECOMMENDED Right!!!
I am glad I got that over with. The car will be driven properly from now on.
Anyone else having break in problems. I have heard it contagious.

Aggressive break-ins are fine. You can't be redlining out of the box but these motors are put through stress tests and dynos long before you ever get it.
Just be sure to be good about changing oil early and often in the beginning. Most oftenaggressive break-in will result in a stronger motor.

You gotta seat those rings within the first 50 miles, that means run it hard (once warm) -- probably already done at factory. The break-in is for the rest of the parts in your engine and driveline.
I think you've done well. Aggressive break-ins lead to strength, or at least that's what I've gathered in my minimum ownerships but extensive forum activity.

Wow - You made it to 750 miles. At around 500 miles I officially called mine "broken in" and opend up the engine (I couldn't bear having to keep it under 4000rpm.) Although I am refraining from bouncing off the the rev limiter until I hit 2000 miles
Well, what you have done was the best IMO ... nothing more or less !
If that was my car, I would have done 155 & much more by now ....
Great write up by the way & Thanks allot for sharing.

I would not be too concerned about the break in. Locally, the dealer said "to hell with break in period", just don't redline it for a few hundred (200) miles. Buddy of mine has the car for less than 3 weeks with 800 miles on it and already has had some "fun" against other cars, including a F430.
