415hp enough?
Scalpel vs. a blunt instrument. Both get the job done, in fact both can be devastating, but very different to wield.
Even though the vette has more power, is lighter and wider, to me it is more blunt. The GT3 cars feel precise, as if every millimeter of slop has been engineered out of the shifter, steering, etc.
I really like the new Z06 though, b/c of the pressure it puts on other manufacturers.
Anyway, back on topic, let me address the question from another perspective, apart from a track perspective. As has been pointed out, these cars will see a lot of street miles. Well, my thought is that some cars are just phenomenal in they way the chassis/power balance is struck. Certain cars are just plain *fun* independent of the (low) power they deliver. The Mini, Miata, VW Rabbit, Integra Type R, Civic Si, E30/E36 M3s etc. Examples abound. These cars were all found to be giant killers b/c they brought more to the table than motor. Cars that made you want to get in and drive. Take the long way home. Precision, agility, tossability, feedback. These examples all fit the mold. There are people who purchase these cars even though they can afford a high hp car.
Against that backdrop, I generally don't get transfixed on power. I'm far more interested in a car that pushes my buttons as a discerning driver. I have high hopes for the upcoming GT3 (completed 2/23, the wait now tortuous) and early reports don't disappoint.

Hey Heavy some times I like that. I get the biggest kick when a Ricer comes up to me at the light and I am in the truck- I put the Edge computer to Race mode and I can smoke the Ricer and my tires. Or going up a big grade in the mountains and just motor past all the gassers in the slow lane.
That big duramax turbo diesel humming. (and while pulling my trailer with the GT3 in it!)
BTW the Viper had me screwed up for weeks with the pedals pushed over to the left because of the big tranny tube that comes through the cockpit. I kept hitting the brake in my GT3 when trying to push the gas or hitting the clutch pedal when hitting the brake- after getting out of the Viper. My feet wanted to push to the left.
And I was talking about the handling not the accelleration as you correctly surmised. And your right I could have worded it better
Jeff well put.

RS4 is ~3600lbs 420hp AWD
V8 M3 is not even out yet... should be tough competition though considering how well the m5/6 have faired
Mercs are much heavier and not really the same class at all
GT3 is 415hp (underrated) RWD 3000lbs... easily capable of beating down all of the cars you mentioned.

415bhp is a good amount of power. Anyways the lighter you are the faster you go. The GT3 could do with even less weight, but that would mean it would out perform its more expensive sibling the Turbo and have closer performance range of the GT2. Porsche know why they dont give some models of their cars $$$$ ,lol. But then again that would be a good thing, but it would prob mean less luxuries lol, if you want Noble territory.

BTW you are talking about a guy who is constantly regarded as a "porschephile" on the corvette forums because I wont do the manufacturer group sex where people try to make themselves feel better by putting down other cars. I respect all, favor none, PERIOD. Do some research before you make accusations.
