I know, got the nomex/kevlar shields on my keyboard for some of the replies I expect to get.
Here it is, the stock sound system sucks. Although I plan on mostly track use there will also be plenty of times when I will be driving for hours at a time. Any advice on aftermarket improvements would be helpful. Ipod stuff, CD changer, speakers, etc.

Sound systems are popular upgrades because they're very inexpensive (for the equipment) and relatively easy installs if you know what you're doing.
Do you just want to replace the head unit or the speakers as well?
I recommend a new head unit (complete w/ audio-in jack [ie "ipod jack"] & all the other goodies) & new speakers as well.
Certain speakers are good for bass and certain ones are good for sound quality. What you should do is get pairs of both so that way you will have nice bass and nice sound quality. Likewise, if you just care about sound quality or just bass, pick up all bass speakers.
Anyways, if you walk into a Best Buy, the most expensive head units will cost $400. You don't need to buy these ones necessarily.
Anyways, I'll stop here, but if you are interested, I'll help you find some specific products
**** Still remembers when his dealer told him that an audio-in jack would cost $750 and tried to justify it by saying, 'well, it's an expensive car', as if that has some relevance****

A Quick Thought
I would like to help you with your stereo upgrade issues. I will supply, at my expense, a 1976 Plymouth Volare, with the Ricardo Montalban moon roof option. This vehicle comes from the factory with a deluxe quadraphonic 8 track system that will give you what you are looking for in high end stereo. You will then give the Porsche to me to drive. Call me crazy...
