996 turbo to gtr

Anyone here own a porsche 996 turbo? I want to hear from others perspective of how gtr compares with 996 turbo, performance, maintenance, and cost for aftermarket parts. I been thinking about making a switch, but I heard the transmission is very pricey if it goes out.

Used to own a 900whp 996TT and a 800whp GT2. Now I'm on my 3rd GT-R. I think you can probably infer my opinion on the matter from that information.

That said, I absolutely love Porsche. Always will.

I also had a 996tt and upgraded to a GTR.

I absolutely loved the 996tt after being a Vette(s) owner for over 10 years.. Being a Porsche owner, I don't need to tell you how well the Porsche is built.

The first time I drove the GTR, I was in love. Between the transmission differences and the way the torque felt, I just had to have one... I seriously recommend you test drive one.

I myself prefer cars that feel raw when driving, I wasn't to happy with how GTR and all the newer PDK Porsches feel and take away that rawness. They are all very impressive performance wise, I personally prefer the feel, have to wonder if why maybe Porsche piped in exhaust notes to the Carrera S interior cabin to help offset what technology is slowly eliminating....

Haven't owned a Turbo, but drove one plenty (owned a C2). The performance of the GT-R has a slight advantage. Maintenance - about equal, depending on usage. Cost of aftermarket parts - I'd say there is a huge deviation, some parts are less, other vendors (JDM) are significantly higher.

I'd say - it is cheaper to extract more from the GT-R than the Turbo as well (either 996 or 997). $2k = about 100HP (depending on MY). So if you get a 2013, that runs 10's before a tune, you'll be knee deep into the 10's with a modest tune.

I dont have a 996TT but I have an 09TT. A month ago, I picked up a 13GTR and it's pretty darn fast, as far as modding goes, I think you will spend the same amount of money (may be a little cheaper in the ECU tune).

They are two different cars, the GTR is bigger but surprisingly it handles extremely well and I have not own it long enough to tell you about its reliability.

Yeah, I didn't elaborate on the trans... Powertrain is like 6 years or something, and there are cheap fixes to some of the common causes of failures (parts themselves are relatively inexpensive, seals, magnets, etc...). The newer boxes have had some upgraded parts (gear select forks, etc...).

Some of the biggest myths about transmission warranty claims are spread on the interwebz. If you have any serious questions, let me know (or other owner).

Other reliability issues - My car (and I know of quite a few others) that haven't had so much as a hiccup since '08.

He's even done a few track days with his car. Correct me if I'm wrong, Jasper. That just goes to show that the transmission on the GTR isn't as "weak" as some may like to think.

I'm in the same boat having just sold my 996TT this past weekend. I keep looking at more "expensive" sports cars but keep coming back to the GTR. I really need to get some seat time in a modded one.

After speaking with Neil Switzer a few weeks ago. I feel that the tuner end of this platform is very well taken care of. It seems like most issues with regards to this platform have been worked out. I especially like the fact that we can get big HP out of these cars and drive them daily with little to no issues.

The bigger question is, is it worth the premium to buy a 2011-2013? Or buy a used modded 09-10...... decisions decisions.....

I picked the 13 because I didnt want to deal with warranty issue but it could change any time since Im hungry for powaaaaah.

I had a 10 for a while, got HKS Spec-R & HKS midpipe installed immediately after taken delivery of the car and the exhaust notes improved quite a bit.

If you dont care about warranty, I'd get an 09-10 and mod it up or buy one already modded from a reputable tuner.

GL w/your decision.

I've had the same experience as all of the guys that posted before me. I had a modded 996TT and the GTR beats it hands down in just about every category. It is true that if you are the kind of guy that likes to shift and looking for more "feel" out of a car, maybe the GTR isn't for you. Then again, I wouldn't say the TT is either. In that case, you should be looking at GT3's... I use mine as a DD, and have a Cayman S race car that I take to the track often.

I personally love the 996TT and just can't depart from it as it was one of my first dream cars while younger but the truth is I'm in the process of accruing either 12 or 13 GTR

Exactly my opinion. Want to swap gears and be highly involved in the driving experience? GT3. All else ... R35 GTR.

Get both!
