V tines day dinner

Hello,

There was a pretty good deal at work for live lobster so on friday I will be picking up a live lobster coming in from Maine to make dinner for the wifey. I have never cooked lobster before and was wondering if anyone on here had some good recipes. I wanted to check here for live feedback vs grabbing the first recipe I found on google.

Thanks
RB

Get a big pot, at least 5qt. You didn't say how big they are.

Fill about 2/3rds with water, add salt pepper, & some garlic. Then boil till they turn bright red, takes about 8-12min. Bring 1-2 sticks of butter to melt in a pot. You can also add some spices & garlic to the butter.

Really that is it. At least that is how we did it in Boston.

That sounds just how Lobster needs to be made. Worry about making the complimentary dishes more than the lobster, all the lobster needs is what Mike said.

Funny thing is this is what we used to call "Chicken Lobsters", would put them back. Most of the time they were 5+lbs. A couple of times we found some in the rocks during low tide in Plymouth. Yes, the Pilgrim town.

yeah hopefully they come a bit bigger, but I am not a fan of left over lobster so I hope its not the lobster that was the first one voted off of the biggest loser lobster town.

I would recommend "steaming" the lobsters, instead of boiling them. I think they have a much better flavor done that way when steamed with the veggies and herbs.

Get a large pot and if you don't have a big enough steamer basket to fit in the bottom, just place a few glass or ceramic bowls upside down so the lobsters sit on top of those and are not in the water at the bottom of the pot.

Here's a good recipe.

Steamed Lobster Recipe

Preparation Time: 20 minsServings: 4

1 tablespoon salt per 1 quart water added
2-2 pound Maine lobsters
1 medium onion, rough chopped (approximately 3/4 inch square )
2 stalks celery, rough chopped
1 tsp cracked peppercorns
2 bay leaves
whole branches of fresh dill (if no dill, substitute tarragon or parsley)

  • Cover vegetables and seasonings with 1 1/2 inches of water.
  • Bring to a boil and add the steamer basket with the lobsters in it and cover tightly.
  • Cook for 15 minutes, making sure there's still enough water in the bottom of the pot. If you do add more water, it is not necessary to add more salt, because only the water evaporates.
  • Check for doneness with one of the small legs. Then, remove from the pot and crack the lobster and enjoy!.

Thanks for that. I am going to go with the steamed after reading that it usually produces a better texture to the meat compared to boiling
