Repair costs (after warranty expires)

Are these cars expensive to fix after the warranty period is over?
What kinds of repairs are typically necessary in the high miles car?

I guess my question can be rephrased - would you keep the car after the warranty expires? Any reliability issues?

I had a BMW 7 in the past, and keeping those babies after the warranty expired was generally out of the question.

No more expensive than most other imports. The biggest expense outside of warranty is taking them to bad dealers. The manufactures really control them while in warranty. When outside you'll find yourself getting screwed with misdiagnosed problems and repairs. Find the right shop is very important.

Thank you. That answers my question. Probably use well reputed independents after warranty is over instead of the stealerships (as they are referred to in the BMW world)

Just from reading other posts and observations, I think the following should be considered:

  • Air suspension
  • front CV joints (if you have a 4)
  • Curious to see how the PDK behaves after 5 years...

I kept my S550 for about a year after my warranty expired and it wasnt that bad. I guess those cars are really built to last. I made sure all the major services and transmission fixes were done prior to hitting 50k miles.

I did have a few minor fixes like the sensors, radio went silent and it cost me about $1000 to fix but that was about it. Dont know if I can say the same for BMW, Audi or Porsche.

I would never hold this car after warranty or extended warranty. Why don't you by a reliable extended warranty.

Don't get me wrong. As far as the car goes, its fun to drive and is a great daily driver.

However I've been to the dealership maybe 10 times in the last 6 months. None of the issues have been mandatory fixes (you can live without a heated seat working), however I'm sure all the fixes would cost an arm and a leg outside of warranty.

I don't know of 1 instance where any of my friends have had a german car outside of warranty and didn't spend boat loads on repairs.

My PP has plenty of time on the warrantee, but my 2003 996 is way out of Porsche warrantee. What I do is what was recommended by super50 and have a good indy to perform oil changes and fixes. That route does not cost an arm and a leg. I plan on trading in my PP when the 36 month lease expires, well within the warrantee period.

Sad to think that you can pay upward 100k for a car and then be forced to sell it after 50k warranty expires.

Why don't you guys just get an extended warranty to 100k miles? Though it sucks and only gives u an extra 2 years. Porsche really should offer like a 8 year warranty or something like that. 6 years total is nothing.
