New 2017 4S - wheel question
I'm actively looking for a set of wheels/Snows - thanks for all the tips on here so far.
What I did for wheels/snow was to buy on eBay four 18" OEM front wheels. I paid about $250/wheel, freight included. The narrower front rims offer a much wider selection of winter tires. I bought Michelin Ice 3 tires, which have made my previous rwd cars handle like a "goat" in snow. In my opinion, the staggered wheels used by many manufacturers limits tire selection, and does not offer (to me) any practical handling advantages. True, wider tires do help a car understeer, but I'm an 80 year old geezer who was raised on oversteering cars, especially in snow. I am much more comfortable with more neutral handling or oversteer..
I just scored a set of OEM 19” wheels on eBay with a set of Michelin Pilot Alpins mounted and balanced (TPMS included). The tires are used but have 80% tread so they’ll be good for a couple of seasons I’m imagining. $1200 shipped to my door. I just couldn’t bear dropping at least $4k on a new set from Suncoast, etc. Now I can put that cash into radar/laser protection!
Beer - Congrats on your score. Could you share the specs of your wheel purchase - specifically offset, rim width, and anything else you deem relevant. I am seeing Panny 970 options for sale - but I'm not sure if those older wheel specs fit my 2017 (971).
I'm ok with 9 inch width for all 4 - may prefer that actually for rotation purposes and therefore tire wear.
I'm very unclear on what range of offset I can run on this 2017 - and how the offset differs from the 970 to the 971 versions of these wheels.

Onthefly: Wanna know if a 971 wheel fits a 970 and vice versa? The short answer is "probably". What I would do is to compare part numbers - for instance if a part number for a 971 wheel is the same as an identical 970 wheel then you have a good fitment.
In my case, I wanted the narrower and lighter 8" wide rim 18" wheel. This is a standard front fitment on a '14 S. Rear fitment is a 9" wide rim and 18" wheels. I could not find any assurance that the narrower rim would fit the rear, so I bought a narrower rim from a vendor who had a full return provision. Did a trial fitment on my rear and it fits nicely. Didn't worry about offset with any oem wheel, figuring that offset in oem wheels is fairly conservative. There is always the option of adding spacers. Porsche sells at big $$ simple 5mm spacers.

Hi OnTheFly: the wheels I bought on eBay are OEM 9” and 10” by 19”, with offsets of 60 and 61. The seller is a garage obviously experienced in performance cars and the owner assured me these would fit. They’ll be here in a few days. A lot of OEM 19” wheels seem to hit eBay in the $500-700 range for a set, and there are lots of tire choices for winter. Good luck hunting!
