Tail light mod

So I’ve been thinking of doing this for awhile now and decided to do it while my car was in for a scratch on the passenger side rear quarter panel. I haven’t picked it up yet but the guy who owns the shop is a friend and he sent me this small video.

I was able to open the video just fine...looks like a nice mod that will provide thinner tail lights to make it look more modern.

Video worked for me. I agree with DogWood - not really my taste.

Really, you prefer this bulbous wart of a tail light ( excuse the dented bumper, over excited Nissan Leaf tried to get past me)

To this?

oh yeah, it's totally a individuals taste kinda thing, the painted over tail light just looks "wrong" to me, can't really nail down why, but it just doesn't work in my mind

Yes, but I’m working On a fix to that. If you jumper the turn signal wire to the tail light or brake light wire, it gives you back the turn signal on the lower 2 rows of leds. Ran into a few issues on my first attempt but working on a solution at the time.

Nice.

I was also thinking....I've seen some cars and buses with vinyl advertisements that covers the window areas. I think they're translucent and allow for you to see out of them. Then again, they might be printed in such way for you to see. Maybe they're "dot" printing, which may not look great, not sure.

Finally found the fix for my turn signal problem on my tail light mod. A company called Diode Dynamics (Diodedynamics.com) sell a little circuit called "tail as turn" which allowed me to use the bottom 2 rows of the tail lights as turn signal/running light and brake light. It works correctly but does throw an occasional error on my instrument dial. I believe a resistor in series with the tail light input should fix the issue but I haven't tried it yet as the error goes away and it really doesn't bother me (much). I also installed the osram reverse diode leds (you can see them at the top left and right side of the license frame on the second pic) that 970gts installed so that makes up for and actually improves on the reverse lights that my mod painted over. I know this mod is subject to personal taste but I like it and I'm the only one I have to please.

Final post on this issue, I installed the bleeder resistors and it fixed the light error I was getting when using the turn signal and brake light at the same time! So now everything is good, no errors and all lamp functions work. If anyone is interested in one or a set of tail light units, I have a set that function perfectly and are as good ecstatically as you can expect for a 10 year old tail light assembly
