Heated Steering Wheel Issue

2014 Panamera 4. I'm adding a heated steering wheel that was not included in initial build. I bought a used steering column switch and clock spring that has the heating socket. Swapped it out and the heated steering wheel works, but my multifunction steering wheel does not... no horn or volume control and I can't scroll through the selections on the right side scrolling wheel. I did not copy the original Control Unit data to the new control switch because I thought it would overwrite the heated steering wheel feature. I am guessing the new control switch did not have a multifunction feature... can I code it from my PIWIS? How is that accomplished. If that is not possible I'm thinking I need to find a new control unit that matches the features on my Panny exactly? Any input is appreciated.

post of a picture of what you swapped out, the previous wheel, and the new wheel. You made need a GPS adaptor, or coding, but I can't help much without seeing what you swapped out.

ps; i've added heat / swapped wheels / clock springs in a few of my cars, so I know it can be done.

Heated Steering Wheel Swap

I installed the "new" wheel that has the heat plug... and I now have a heated steering wheel... unfortunately, I have lost all of the multifunction steering wheel features, including the horn. My PIWIS II took a crap and I'm waiting for a replacement... here are the pics of old and new wheel... same model just with the heated feature...

Replacement with heat function...

Did you swap trim parts, or did you use dye to change colors?

Did you swap JUST the clockspring or the entire staulk assembly? I know I had issues when I swapped my staulk assembly b/c it needed to be coded, and ended up swapping JUST the clock spring and not the extra parts (the car really didn't like it either, tons of warning lights, PASM, airbag, etc.)

My GUESS is that the clock spring you put in, came from a heated wheel that didn't have Multifunction, but I didn't even know if Panamera's had that option honestly. Did the new (to you) steering wheel come with the same clock spring or was it from a different car? Did it come from another panamera or a different model?

I replaced the stalk and the clockspring, they came together so I thought it would solve any issues if there was a heated wheel component in the stalk I wasn't aware of. I'm thinking you are absolutely right though, I'll put the new clockspring on my old stalk and see what happens... I also see a damaged plug... the one at 12 o'clock that plugs into the clockspring from the harness... I ordered a new one and will swap that out as well. The strange thing is my heated wheel works, without any coding or permissions from Porsche...
I came to the same conclusion that you did about the clockspring coming from a car that didn't have the multifunction steering wheel, but like you, I've never seen a Panamera equipped like that. The only thing I can think of is maybe it came from another model, I believe the clockspring is common to three or four... and I was just lucky to get it.... I'll post results when I work through it. The replacement for my dead PIWIS II hard drive should be here in about two weeks from PRC... I hope to. have everything swapped out by then... really appreciate your input on this one!

I replaced the new "stalk', with the old one... no change... I am still stuck with a nonfunctioning multifunction wheel, no horn and an airbag light on my dash. Now all of a sudden the SRS airbag is engaging too deep in the steering wheel and it will not allow the horn to function, it is just engaged solidly... WTF? I called my local "indy"... he didn't want to get involved... Do I have a Porsche Poltergeist?

I'm going to guess the clockspring came out of a 2010-2013 that had heat but not multifunction (meaning it came on at X degrees).

Regarding the horn no longer working ; There are little nubs on on the airbag that can be spun to increase or decrease their length, you'll have to mess with them to get a good fit in your steering wheel. Just from the pics you posted, the airbag looks more recessed in the new wheel than it did in the old wheel.

Regarding the airbag light, I imagine a good connection isn't being made.

I really do appreciate your input... I found the "release mechanism" in the steering wheel was not solidly seated in the channels it is supposed to ride in... I pried it into its proper position and the airbag now sits normally and seems as if it will operate the horn when/if I find out why it is mute. I'll have to examine the airbag for those "nubs"...

You are right, the clockspring is pre-2014... I guess I have to bite the bullet for a proper replacement... I'm planning to disassemble everything tomorrow and check all the connections... man, this has been soooo much fun! I'll let you how this shakes out...

I bit the bullet and ordered a new clockspring, my third in this epic conversion LOL! I always regret messing with electronics on this beast...

Question, I have a heated steering wheel and want to swap it for a None heated steering wheel problem is I get an era message stating about the airbags, I have a 2019 Porsche Cayenne, is there any way to go around this? FYI I don’t connect the Marshall heating module I leave it loose because there’s no where I can connect it on the non-heated steering wheel

The airbag light issue has to do with the way you handle the system... did you disconnect the battery prior to pulling the airbag? Are you using a PIWIS? You may have to go in and remove the heated steering wheel function from the options installed list... good luck! I'm headed off to the dealer because I can't communicate with my multifunction wheel after installing the heated wheel... had it to two independents and neither could solve the issue...
