15 issues… Any ideas?

Hi all,

Just picked up a 2014 Panamera Turbo 970.2. Whilst I am new to Panamera ownership (and to 6speedonline), I am not new to the Panamera platform (as my dad previously had a 970.1 Turbo and currently a 970.2 Turbo). I picked up my Panamera a couple of weeks ago, and I genuinely believe it is the best car I’ve bought. However, the car came with its own set of issues, which I’m hoping to get your opinions and advice on please.

Here are the following DTC codes:

DME DTCs:
P0016 - Crankshaft position vis-a-vis intake camshaft (Bank 1)
P0344 - Intake camshaft sensor (Bank 1)
P1046 - Acoustic simulator solenoid valve driver stage

Transmission Control DTC:
U0418 - Check PSM control unit trouble codes content

Porsche Stability Management DTCs:
002085 - Sport mode, centre differential lock, fault
00208A - Sport mode fault
C12080 - Check engine control unit trouble codes content
C12081 - Control unit fault, rear differential lock
C12086 - Electric parking brake (EPB) control unit fault
C120A1 - Centre differential lock control unit fault

Rear Differential Lock DTC:
096C - Motor or position sensor polarity reversal

A/C DTC:
C1201F - No communication with gateway control unit

Reversing camera/surround view DTC:
000031 - Front camera, image error

Rear end electronics DTC:
80730E - Rear silencer change over valve for exhaust flaps fault
C13314 - Communication with slide/tilt roof (Rear 1)

The following errors come up on the cluster at every start up:
  • PSM failure
  • Fault All-wheel dr. system
  • Start/Stop mode deactivated
  • Reduced engine power (red warning - only come on once after a ‘spirited’ drive)
  • Fault differential lock (with a red exclamation on the rear axle - again on only come on once after a ‘spirited’ drive)

It should also be noted that the Panamera takes 2-3 seconds of cranking before starting every time, irrespective of cold start or not.

During my short ownership, I have done the following: replaced the battery with a new battery from the Porsche Dealer; replaced all 8 spark plugs; replaced all 8 ignition coils; replaced all 8 spark plug tube seals (oil leak); replaced valve cover gaskets (oil leak); replaced radiator (broken - coolant leak); and replaced the coolant vent tube (coolant leak).

My initial thoughts:
  • The previous owner seems to have hit a kerb or something that has caused the front right alloy wheel to be bent. Maybe the wheel speed sensor is damaged causing the PSM issues? However, checking live data, all 4 wheels show the correct direction and speed.
  • The front two tyres are both 245/40/20, as opposed to the 255/40/20 size they should be. The rear tyres are 295/35/20 (which are the correct sizes). Looking online, this is outside the 1% tolerance, which could be causing issues with the PSM?
  • Investigating the PSM fault on forums typically leads back to either the battery/plugs/coils needing to be replaced - which I have already done.
  • Potentially the high pressure fuel pump needs replacing - which could be throwing the reduced engine power fault, as well as the 2-3 seconds to start. There is also a noticeable vibration at idle, which makes me double down on the idea that the high pressure fuel pump needs replacing. However, as this is a very pricey part, is there a way to double-check?
  • I have the Porsche Sports Exhaust option, however, when hitting the button, the flaps don’t open. It is clear to see that there is some moment at each actuator of the exhaust after pressing the button, but it is not enough to open the flaps. I have ordered a hand pump to see if the valves will open (and stay open manually) - which could indicate that the motor would need to be replaced.
  • Whilst I can rev through the entire rev range (at what feels like full power), I can’t access the Sport and Sport Plus modes. Every time I press the button, I get a “not possible’ message on the cluster.
  • When I corner at a fast or slow pace, there doesn’t seem to be any crunching or abnormal noises from the front or rear (in terms of the diffs). The PSM seems to be working full, and I feel comfortable taking corners at high speeds, as opposed to a RWD car.

The car drives amazing, and I’m absolutely in love with it. There are a host of issues, but they don’t seem to massively affect the car in a noticeable manner (besides the vibration - which I suspect is the bent rim).

Any thoughts on any of the above issues would be massively appreciated (apologies for the long post!)

Thanks in advance - here’s a pic of my new baby!

I have some of those myself . Camshaft , its the clodged solenoid . Its replecable . Check the oils also , looks like e neglected car .
i have differential fault too . Replaced the miss comunicating module , and still no result . So looking farward what your porsche dealer has to say .

Thank you for the reply. Could you explain the clogged solenoid in a bit more depth please? Any idea where it is situation, or even perhaps a part number?

Yes, the previous owner did unfortunately neglect it, however I’m trying to do my best to restore it back to an OEM+ condition. Im planning on changing all the fluids in the car within the next couple of weeks (front and rear diffs, PDK fluid, engine oil, coolant, etc).

Absolutely, I will update this thread as I go along - so fingers crossed you’ll see an update with the fix from my side soon.

the solenoid valve get clodged by dirty oil by the time and keeps camshaft in advanced position.its basicly a shaft inside with a couple of tiny holes same as oil pump soleniod which lets oil pass and lubrificate the cams . That can cause loss of power and difficulty to turn the car on . Start by replacing all car oil and using a liquid molly oil flusher just in case to remove any debry from the engine.if oil was neglected like in my panamera , that cause streched oil tensioner too. The solenoid , is around 250$ if you look around . I have miss comunicating in differential module as well but looks like you have with psm too . I would try to check all fuses for any blown one and than use piwis to check and update everything .

That sounds very plausible in my case - previous owner clearly neglected the car. The symptoms of the power loss and struggling to start are present too. I'm sure I have a can of Liqui-Moly Engine Flush Plus, so will definitely stick that before changing out the oil. Did you end up replacing the oil tensioner too? I don't have PIWIS, but the iCarsoft diagnostic tool (which I'm finding isn't that great). Think it might be time to upgrade to PIWIS.

Much appreciated!

First thing I did was change the Battery (and code it using the iCarsoft Diagnostic Tool). Then I changed all 8 spark plugs and coils. Spark plugs definitely needed to be changed. Coils had no cracks in the casings at all, but just thought I'd do them all as a preventative maintenance.

Was hoping that would fix the PSM/Start Stop issue, but no bueno! I have a feeling that fixing the diff(s) issue(s) would hopefully get rid of the PSM light, but need to investigate further.

Thanks for the replies so far. Just to update, I took the Panamera to a local independent who reset the codes. The following codes are persistent:

DME DTCs:
P0344 - Intake camshaft sensor (Bank 1)

Transmission Control DTC:
U0418 - Check PSM control unit trouble codes content

Porsche Stability Management DTCs:
002085 - Sport mode, centre differential lock, fault
00208A - Sport mode fault
C12080 - Check engine control unit trouble codes content
C12086 - Electric parking brake (EPB) control unit fault
C120A1 - Centre differential lock control unit fault

A/C DTC:
C1201F - No communication with gateway control unit

Reversing camera/surround view DTC:
000031 - Front camera, image error

Rear end electronics DTC:
80730E - Rear silencer change over valve for exhaust flaps fault
C13314 - Communication with slide/tilt roof (Rear 1)

I will say that the start up faults still
appear, however, I have noticed more recently that I'm getting a "reduced engine power" warning when I'm driving around (irrespective of if I'm driving spiritedly or not). Again, thinking that it maybe leading to the high pressure fuel pump.

Hoping for work to settle down a bit before I start tackling the issues and investigating further. As before, any opinions are massively appreciated. I know there's a lot on the list, but will hopefully tackle them one by one!

So maybe its not the solenoid but the sensor itslef of camshaft . Its easy to replace but will make huge difference in car engine.
about the other codes , I think psm control unit hve to be changed . Sport chrono is off because of that . Did you try and check all the fuses ? There are 2 boxes in each driver and passenger side and one in the trunk

Ah awesome. I think you're right. I'll start off by changing the Camshaft sensor first and then reporting back. Hopefully it lets me access sport mode and sport plus modes. Do you know if it's a difficult task to change the camshaft sensor on bank 1 (assuming bank 1 is on the left hand side when you're standing in front of the car)?

In terms of the PSM, again, I think you're on the right path. According to the forums I've previously checked, it normally has to do with battery/coils (which I've already changed but no success). I'll try to locate the PSM module and check to see if there is any electric issues, or if the module is dead itself. The garage previously checked the fuses (had an issue with the AC compressor - which was changed), and they changed 2 that were dead. I think I might double check them all again.

Bank 1 is passenger side, I just did this yesterday in mine (not Turbo) and took less then 30 minutes start to finish. It didn't solve my PSM issue so I'm on to coils next....Best of luck!!

Thank you for the reply. Glad to hear it wasn’t a bit of a process. Any chance you can point me into the direction of a DIY guide? Is it under the black cap that sits on both banks of the engine (near the coils), or have I got that completely wrong?

Coils and battery is typically the thing that fixes most of the PSM issues on the forum. Even though I’ve changed them on mine, it hasn’t had any success in getting rid of the PSM light. Hoping you have more success with the coils - fingers crossed!

It is exposed at the back of the motor, just after the cover. there are a couple hoses that run above it that kinda get in the way but I didn't have any issue getting to it and remove/replacing it (baby hands may have came in handy there LOL) Should be able to find a diagram, I'll see if I can find a link for you. It takes a T30 (if I remember right, I'll check when I get home for ya) tamper torx bit to remove.

Yea hoping the coils solve it!! Want my baby back to go hit the roads with all the fall colors before she gets put away for the winter.....

Thanks for the heads up. Will investigate and try to see if I can find it. Hahaha - I know what you mean about baby hands. I have girl wrists, so I’m hoping I should be able to slip my hand through and wiggle it out.

Any idea what that thing is at the front of the engine then? I always assumed that was the cam sensor?

I’m rooting for ya dude! Coils seem like a pretty simple DIY job. I had an oil leak, so just asked the garage to do it whilst they were replacing the valve cover gaskets, otherwise I would have attempted to DIY it. Are you planning on changing plugs too?

Not sure what that is honestly lol, I'll post a pic later tonight for you!
Going to check a plug and see how they look and decide from there on the plugs, going to do the two coils that I'm having the misfires on first and see if that solves it, if it does I'll do all of them shortly after just to be on the safe side. Does look pretty straight forward. Now to just sit around and wait for them to show up.lol
On second thought just ordered the whole kit with plugs so it'll be a complete job...should be here tomorrow and I can get started on it.
