Probably build a spec Boxster for about 23k all said and done. We try to make sure we can provide a 'kit' for those who have a donor car and want to put everything but the cage in themselves. Faster than a 944, mid-engine, and a heckuva lot of fun.
what do you think of an 00 Box S for this purpose (has no PSM) ..Perhaps better in some ways for learning?

If it is strictly a track car then the spec Boxster is more bang for the buck in the learning department as it is cheaper. The S has more track benificial goodies like larger cross-drilled brakes and a 3rd radiator. I have an 00 S that is dual purpose and it is a great car to learn with. The problem is that it can become a $$$ pit when you get the the track mod bug. It is nice to out-duel the 996 TT's though.

was gonna sell it but...as I bought it new and it has only 14K miles on it...sounds like perfect car to learn on. I've always loved it but haven't really ever pushed it...thanks!

I have had super luck with my track only 95 M3. They are bullet proof, and cheap to mod and make fast. Just my 2 cents. All mentioned are good choices.

Buy a well set-up dedicated 944 or 944 S2. Will teach you momentum and the importance as it relates to quickly getting around the track. A high hp car could retard your development.

I started with an 83 944 and gradually moved up trough 3 944's (The last being an 89 S2 race car). I agree with David 100% about 944's being a great platform to start with. They are quick and relaively light weight.(When you take some stuff out ) and with some suspension mods, you could be stomping on same vintage 911's after you have some experience behind the wheel. Compared to many cars out there, they are ok on the pocket book as well.

I'm open to all suggestions. I'm primarily looking for advice about what base car to use, any make, any model. I'm leaning toward either a 944 turbo or, a 993 911. Then of course, there's the question of getting something that's already prepared or, building it up myself.

I currently don't own a tow vehicle or trailer, so that's an issue that needs to be addressed.

My budget is limited. I figure $20,000 or, less, for the car and, $10,000 max for modifications. The tow vehicle will come out of a seperate buget because it will also be used as a family hualer. An open tailer would come out of the car/ mods budget, looking for advice on that as well. I lurk a lot on this board and post very little. I value all your opions greatly thanks in advance!
buy my m3 get twin screw SC all for under 20k :-)

Ditto!! The Elise come straight out of the box ready for the track, particuarly if you find one with the "Sport" suspension and wheels. That being said, the difference at the Lotus test track in Hethel England between the standard suspension and the sport suspension was negligible per lap most likely due to the stickier Yokohama tires on the sport suspension.

^^^watch out for saftey factors though...I was looking at doing an exige...but...A FULL cage would have been neccesary as the doors are as thick as hotel tp...

The Elise/Exige bodywork is a composite material designed to "explode" (strong term) to absord the force of the impact, but the chassis (extruded/bonded aluminum) is extremely strong and safe. The car on track is very go-cart like, fun as hell but lacks the grunt for big tracks like Road America.

Biggest problem with any Lotus is finding a good dealer to service it for you if you don't do your own work.
