why are toyo R1s half the price of PS2s?

just curious..

a 315.25.19 is $500 for a PS2, while a toyo R1 in the same size is like 260

I believe part of it is the strong Euro vs. the dollar, while the exchange rate to the Yen isn't as bad. I've noticed all the European stuff has gone up noticeably these past 6 months - even the Contis and Pirellis.

What boxzing said In reality it isn't the dollar relationship as much as the supply/demand.

Even when the supply is there Michelins has always been and will always be one of the most expensive tires in the market. The Advan Sports are up there as well. Both of them have less out of round issues than most, very good build quality and can be pushed pretty hard.

They have the Sport Maxx GT is coming soon to a tire shop near you. Releases in May and should compete very well against the PS2's and Advan Sport. I am curious to see how much better they are. The Cargraphics GT3RS uses these in 19's and said they really like them a lot.

Contis - bleh - Pirelli's - bleh

Good question! I am a few days away from buying the same size tire. I don't really want to compromise on performance, but I'm a newbie and need guidance.
Thanks.

I am usually not a follower of you get what you pay for. But in tires it does seem to follow that rule when it comes to high performance tires if they are being used for HIGH PERFORMANCE. Meaning you if you don't push your car to at least 1/2 of it's ability 1/2 of the time do you need a tire that can be pushed 100% of the time?

I just have never been a fan of the Pirelli tires. Bad wear, okay grip, and doesn't give me the confidence I like in a tire. That is just my opinion.

I haven't tried the Conti 3's yet but I haven't heard too many great things about them.

Advans are great if I could get the sizes and I would put these up there with the PS2's. I had them before but not in the sizes I run now. If they had them I would have purchased them over the PS2's.

Toyo's are not as responsive as I like. It's like a delayed response with turn in and feel. I returned two sets in the past that I tried on my M3 and M5. Not a fan.

Not too familiar with Dunlop brands as I haven't tried any.

The rest I have no experience with.

Good luck with your choices. Michelins are very hard to find right now in the popular sizes. I don't know why they dont' wake up and get it rolling! Pirelli has also followed suit in production. While the Michelins are on backorder you would think they would ramp up production to get more sales but nope. They just sat back and watched their inventory dwindle as well. They have a plant in Rome, GA - so they can't tell me its the exchange rate. Toyo has a plant here as well.

I understand that the larger tires were not as popular 2 years ago but they have to wake up and meet demand. It's out there and people want them.

Okay enough of my *****ing

Back on Topic.

tires

There has been alot of discussion on these topics. The Euro being up in value has some effect but I have a different take.

Firstly, with my NSX.....

I bought a set of wheels and put on some Falcon Beta 451. They had good bang for the buck value and many people had them liked them. I soon found that these same people must have never had a high end tire.

I switched the tires to Bridgestone S03. You could tell by the tire construction how much nicer they were. The sdie walls alone were 3 times stiffer and the tire seemed much more solid.

I have been driving them for a couple of years and they are great with no issues.

Second, with my C4

Basically did the same thing (not a good learner) and put on some Toyo T1R, bang for the buck. They are a nice tire but if you have ever driven on really nice tires they are just okay. Im going to switch them out and put on some Michelin P2. I hope that will give me the ride I want.

On a side note:

A couple of things I am not concerned with...tire wear, wet weather traction.

I am concerned with: Dry handling, road noise, staying "round" from sitting in the garage for a week without driving.

I found that whatever the boards are saying are the best usually are. There is no free lunch and you will give up something with a lower priced tire. It may not be a big deal. It just depends on what you want. Maybe if I drove my car everyday it would be different.

My .02

interesting. i have ran yoko advan, mpsc, ps2, corsa system, corsa etc.
other than mpsc none of the above are even close to the grip of RA1 and now with R888, toyo's getting a lot better. short of BFG R1 or HooHoo R6 and Khumo V710 (all three are not really streetable), i haven't driven anything that can touch RA1 or R888 on or off track.
