Am I crazy?
Am I crazy?
I am a junior in college going to school in Connecticut...home is California. Right now I have a AWD 2003 silverado that is perfect for the winters here and a fun car. But I have been getting bored of it and looking to move on to something else and have looked at a lot of things but right now I really want to get into a 1970's 911. Would I be crazy to have my only car be a 911 in a CT winter? Also I don't need a car to get to class or anything. This would just be for when I want to go to the store or to the movies or something. I have been looking at cars in the 13-20K range. Thanks for any help.
Cars I have found:
Long ways away but in the right price range: http://preferredautobrokers.net/inde...per&Itemid=115
Closer but a little more expensive: http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/...ml#more_photos

That SC has the 74 Carrera look, back dating is getting popular and I for one, am a fan of the Duck Tail.. PPI is a must, for any 911, good thing is that the 78 SCs are when Porsche started galvanizing 911s, but salt is never your friend, bad for your car & for you....
Here is a buddy's 86 back dated to 74....

I bought my 911 when I was a sophmore in college.. I DD my car and put close to 20k miles a year.. I know its a little newer, but if you have a job, you can do it!
(one condition does apply though.. You need to find a good local shop that works on porsche.. NOT A DEALERSHIP)

This looks like a good deal, you can always put a duck tail on.. Rule of thumb, buy the newest Porsche you can afford (unless you are a nut for old cars like me...)
1988 911 Carrera
1988 911 Carrera. Black on Black 79,400 TRUE miles. This is a factory whale tail black on black leather '88 Porsche Carrera. Car has been completely serviced by John Reaves of Tulsa, OK Speedsportz, LLC. Original miles, clean original paint, immaculate interior with gentle wear on the clean, tear free, scratch free, black leather. Clean stain free carpet. Momo stearing wheel, aftermarket stainless steel exhaust, new air compressor blowing cold air. SOLID in every sense of the word. Fresh rubber, No wrecks fender benders, scratches or rubs. NOT TRACKED! Original build sticker still affixed to underside of hood. This is really a special find. I have yet to come across a car of this age with so little wear to any part of the car. Mechanically and cosmetically sound in every way. Cant find a drop of oil underneath this immaculate example of a an '88! Would like $17,850 but will entertain reasonable offers. Always available for PPI. Additional and better detailed pictures will be available hopefully Monday based on weather conditions! (we've been in a oklahoma rain drizzle for a month, and this car does not see the rain!) This is an Oklahoma car, so of course, NO RUST ANYWHERE!! Please call Jessica at 918-260-3722 for serious inquiries only. Thank you for your interest. Best, Jessica Reaves (also, I can be reached via email at prettyjessilynn@aol.com)

By the way, galvanization started in 1976, not in 1978.
Yes, backdating a Porsche is very popular and I for one like the duck tail too. Nevertheless, the cars shown only have the duck tail but kept both impact bumpers on and, at least for my liking, the duck tail should go with a complete backdate including a long hood. IMHO.

and the early 74 Carrera came with duck tails, as did the original IROC Porsches. A friend use to own Peter Gregg's 74 Carrera, and had the duck that came with it and had the later Carrera tail. Porsche had 3 different Duck Tails, the standard for late 72/73, the alloy based one for the light weights & the one for 74, which didn't have the tag lights built into the bottom edge. I have owned a few factorty ducks in the past, and if you look at the side view of 964s & 993s with the pop-up tail up, the profile is there.... Old Porsche ad

More 74s, note that 74s had the smaller rear bumperetts (later only used on Euros)

I too prefere a long hood, one day, if the stars are right, I'll convert a 88 or 89 Factory Turbo Look to a 73 RSR clone, but with the comfort of a 88

77 if you want to get picky, with the 3.0

I guess someone must then write the editor of Paul Frère's "The Porsche 911 Story" in order to correct the year in which Porsche started galvanizing the bodies as I saw it today on that book when I answered this thread. Maybe you know something in which he was mistaken then. Or could it be that they started in 76 indeed for model year 77? I don't really know anymore as it seems my trusted book is wrong.
When it comes to the duck tail and the long hood etc. I was expressing my opinion and was stated in my line that said "at least to my liking", not that there weren't any impact bumper Porsches with it.

Wow thanks a lot for all the information and some good looking cars. I think I am going to keep my truck for now as I am jobless and any unexpected problems would not be good. Though if I found the right car at the right price that could all change.
