Thoughts on this 964?

I'm interested in purchasing this 964 but I just wanted to see what the experts think!

Thanks in advance

Of course never can tell much with photos, and the write up to me seems weak. Having owned a 964, which is a great car...my first question is why you need a C4? 89 was the first year Porsche built the 4 wheel drive and in many cases the system was plagued with problems, difficult to repair, and made the car overweight. Also check if the heads have been repaired, as early ones did no have seals. Can read more on Rennlist about the C4's.

I question if the paint is original, including all the red painting shown in the interior. If was me, I would speak with the seller, see if he really knows the car, read the documentation he has, speak with shops preformed the maintenance, and have a PPI done b4 bidding. For me, when I bought my C2 used out of state, I even flew down to see the car in person and was there during the PPI. You never know, it could be a great car. Good luck.

Thanks for the response! I definitely prefer a c2 but more importantly a clean car.

I'll definitely keep it all in mind and do some more research!

If you haven't check with various Porsche clubs, Rennlist, Pano from PCA, and contact local Porsche shops. They didn't build many 964 C2's, but there are a few out there - it is just time and patience. It took me a few months to find mine, of all places Craigslist.

I was not dissing a C4, but to me as do not drive in snow, the C2 met all my needs. Maybe drive both and decide. Good luck as the hunt and the education should be fun. BTW, think I do know one 964 C4 that seems very good mechanically, but does need a repaint. It is guards red and was in CT.

If interested I can try and see if still for sale.

c4 reliability

With all due respect, I've not heard of any major issues with the 964 Awd system, including the '89. In many ways the system is better than many of the later years, especially for snow. You can lock the differentials giving you tank like performance.

My 22 year old C4 has never had any issue related to the AWD.

I'll stand corrected if my earlier thread implied the C4 4 wheel drive was not reliable mechanically. The C4 trans does not have any reputation for weaknesses The only difference is the trans and the high pressure brake system that is different and routine maintenance is the same Any problems with the C4 trans is more likely a sensor or hydraulic system. If I was driving the car in the snow a lot, I would lean toward the C4.

But to me, I found the C2 to be little lighter and a bit more agile when pushed a bit in dry weather. 964's are one of the finest 911s every built, they were unappreciated for many years by some, and now seem to be getting proper recognition as it is next to last generation of air cooled smaller sports cars.

It's been awhile but I'm still on the hunt! Glad to hear some positive things about the C4 AWD system as it's much easier to find those. That being said, this car won't be driven in the winter so I'm still hoping to find a C2.

What do you guys think fair market value is for cars with sub 100k miles and cars between 100k-150k miles? I ask because it seems like pricing is all over the place with these things!

farfinator is infamous around these parts
I'd be less concerned with the AWD and more deliberate in investigating any history of dealing withe the notorious head to block sealing issues and thus oil leakage drama. As this is a potential $12+K repair/rebuild/ the status would certain dictate the price offered.
