Video:Porsche 991 CS v Nissan GT-R at track
I completely agree with this aspect of your post, though. Allow me to rephrase to make my rebuttal relevant as it pertains to your original thought concerning this review:
Any magical scenario you can come up with for the Porsche can still be applied to the GT-R.
This is where I was going. Any error you may have believed you found (either perceived on video, or in real time), may really exist for one or both cars... (i.e. the vid of him bouncing off the rev limiter, may not have been on the timed lap recorded - easily editable). This is the problem with video entertainment - overproduction.
Actually I realized I mistyped that, I mean the 2013 GT-R (which has more hp than the previous 2012 model. I'd like to put this up with next years Turbo S model. I'm assuming it will be out by next year. Since This test was between the newest GTR model and the outgoing 997 model. Seems fair dosen't it?
I agree that the next true comparison is the 991 Turbo (not necessarily the S), and we should just have waited for this. But to avoid all of this popularity? You know EVO magazine is eating this up. Why wait for a fair comparo, when this uneven internet fodder is already waiting, and they can blame Porsche for not releasing the Turbo yet?
I agree and disagree. I mean - the 997.2 Turbo was already compared to the pre-2012, and lost, so there is no need to compare a newer GT-R to the same model.

But he prefers to bounce off the rev limiter and slide the car out... Right?

Are you going to try and act like EVO used footage of the non-hot lap while having a timer going on the screen? You cannot be that clueless.
Any error I percieved? You can hear him say he's going to try first gear, then hear the car bouncing off the rev limiter, and then hear him admit his mistake "maybe too many revs" and then watch him shift in the middle of the corner. What more do you want?
Please turn down the ignorance.
I want you to understand that this is just a review..., an opinion. His point was - (over rev or not), based on similar price, the 991 C2S is a tad bit slower than the GT-R, but the 991 is more fun to drive.
I don't understand why this is so difficult... You clearly don't see that. (taken from your kind words above) You cannot be that clueless.

A lap time is not an opinion einstein. It's a quantifiable measure.
His OPINION was that the 991 was more fun to drive than the fat, nanny tech GT-R.
And it sounds like your opinion, which you're entitled to. You can stick with the larger (compared to the 997) nanny tech 991 (unless you feel there aren't any nannies that compare on the 991, then disregard).
I'm sure we all wanted to see an even chance for each car. Same competent driver, same course, same conditions, etc... What did we see? A driver with the manual transmission chose the WRONG GEAR!!! Guess what? That happens in real life! You should really get over this, and move on.

Wow... You're right heavy... A laptime is pure quantifiable truth, and cannot be adjusted.

An advanced driver would not be trying to shift into first gear on a timed lap on TV without having tried it before (unless he was intentionally trying to screw one of the contestants). And no, shifts like that do not happen hardly at in real life from experienced drivers. You won't see guys bouncing off the rev limiter prior to apex, and shifting at the apex, at least not ones that supposedly know how to drive.
But you would have to lose the paddles and learn how to shift to know that. Everyone doesn't have the computers driving for them.
You went from a laptime being an opinion to it now being a pure quantifiable truth that cannot be adjusted? Feel free to make some sense at any time.

Tiff is a horrible driver.
And you're right regarding shifting - 911 Turbo S owners would not be able to relate to your comments at all. They expect the computers to drive for them (probably don't even use the paddles, and just leave in auto-mode, I know my wife did when she ran a 11.4 in the 1/4mi in the GT-R, beating a Z06 by 2 full seconds (he was driving a 6sp manual transmission)).
Now guys,
This is entertaining and all, but lets keep it to a low boil. I have yet to agree completely with any of the magazines and the authors, like anyone else, has their own agenda and set of prejudices so arguing over any article as authority is not worth your time or your considerable car knowledge.
I have not driven other "supercars" but I did get to drive a GT-R before I purchased the 991 and it objectively quick, it handles curves in a unique way, and as a bit of manufacturing technology, it is a marvel - and a great deal for the money.
Faster, more fun, at this level, is nonesense. Both have more power and more speed than anyone can use, except on those special days that we can get track time. And they are both fun to drive - if you can't have a good time in either, there is seriously something wrong with you.
But I bought a 991S because I liked the total package more. I think it is better looking, I think it is more comfortable, I like the brand and the image, and I liked how it drove much better. That is just one man's opinion and I would be honored to own either. But I had my choice and I went Porsche.
There are lots of tests and shootouts to come - some will be a win and others a loss. And in the end, better will only be based on which criteria you apply.
Call me carzy, but I like my 991S more than a 458? Oh, the 458 is beautiful, has a great image, great heritage, etc. It would be tough to go in and out of, on NJ roads I would expect the wheels, tires and axles to go with regularity. And how could I ever drive it, and worse, park it and let it out of my sight. I could lose my license in my 991 just as quickly. And are you going to risk that much money on track days? Not me. As an object of art - great. But unless I am going to park it in my den and watch movies from the front seat on a big screen through the window - it not the car for me. Is the 991S a better car than the 458. For me. Yes - and who is anyone to say otherwise.
Thanks guys, I do love your points (all of them) - just keep within the lines please. They are only cars. Thanks

But you're missing heavy's point - the 911's laptime could have been better (and still lost, but by less of an interval). Isn't that super-mega-important?

The test was unreliable to an unknown extent, so what can we say? Maybe the GT-R is a little faster. How much? We can't be sure. Maybe PDK and better tires on the 991 would close some of the gap. How much? We can't be sure.
But for the Nth time, both cars are plenty fast for everyone here, so let's not make mountains out of molehills.
Agreed, it's getting kind of silly, going in circles now. The thread is turning into heat without light.

I just noticed that you have the C63 AMG. I have never been a big Merc guy - owned a E320 and hated it - good car, but not my cup of tea. (and it was from the merger period and had 8 recalls
). But I have a buddy who is thinking about the C63 AMG. How do you like it (sorry to be off topic).Michael

Because he would be unbiased, right?
