Stop/Start Feature

I'm sitting at a light and a guy on a Harley pulls up next to me (he had been following me through several stops) and asks if my car turned itself off when I stopped. I had the top down, and over the roar of the Harley I explained the stop/start feature to him. He thought it was pretty cool.

Two points. First, even though I don't have PSE, he could tell that the car shut off over the noise of the bike. The car must sound pretty good with the standard exhaust. I can't imagine how good it sounds with PSE. Second, I'm really liking the stop/start. I get to a light, put the car in neutral, and ..... silence. I push in the clutch and it roars to life with no hesitation at all. Kind of fun if you have to stop at lights.

I use the start/stop feature in my 991cs too. But, I worry about the extra wear on the starter and battery over an extended period of time/miles?

My concern too ,

Our Prius has a similar feature but has no starter. the electric motor starts the car.

Mine stops like it is suppose to, but when it's hot out (like it is in the summer in Dallas) it doesn't last for the whole light. Does anyone else find that?

Though I use it, I do wonder about starter wear. I wish they had integrated a starter / generator directly into the drive-train like hybrids. Perhaps they will do that for the 991.2.

1. Driving in Europe (following factory delivery) I noticed that sometimes the car wouldn't shut down at all at a light. This is consistent with Porsche's claim that battery charge state, and current demand, determines how long shut down will last, or if it will engage at all.

2. I asked several times here and at the factory about excess wear on the starter. I was assured by all that the starter--possibly beefed up for this application--is up to the task. If they start to fail, you can bet it'll be after expiry of the factory warranty

That is my understanding also, that the starter/battery was beefed up a bit for this feature.

Tripple digit weather some days here lately -- yes, shortens the stop cycle. I think to meet AC demand / not run down battery too far. Some lights the car decides to skip to auto-off altogether if super hot.

How can you do this, was the PC? Here Europe it is enabled as per default, the PC doesn't even know yet if there is a way to switch it the other way around, disabled when you start the engine as per default ...

US cars allow the auto off to stay switched off ... I always leave that feature off too.

+1, I have not used it much during break in period (300 miles to go). I was concerned it might have an adverse effect.

I like it. The calm that enters the cabin at a stoplight is very soothing.

The beefed up starter is considered a "consumable" like brake pads or wipers

If this is true its clear the starter replacement cost would overwhelm gas saving.
