So what do you say?
So what do you say?
After exiting my car complete strangers frequently come up to me, tell me that they really like my car and then ask "So, how much did that cost?"
I usually smile and say that "you will have to ask my wife, it was a gift"
One of my hobbies is astronomy. We have public viewing sessions and I get the same questions above my real expensive telescope/mount and other associated stuff.
In my opinion, it's not mean spirited to ask the price of the car. I don't want to provide an answer that may insult.

I like your answer, but the bottom line is he shouldn't ask. I agree it's not necessarily mean spirited but it's also none of his business. Too often people pass judgement based on perception of wealth, when they really have no idea how much we are worth or how we spend our money. Sorry didn't mean to get on the soap box. I have had the question, and dodged it with I got a really good deal and have been waiting a long time to be able to get it.
Clearly not appropriate to ask in passing or by strangers, if it's a fellow sports car owner it's a different story but most of them already have a pretty good idea (at the least).
My standard response to a kid is, "way too much (big smile)!" while adding but if you stay in school you'll have one too... sometimes I'll let them sit in it and rev it, they walk away excited and with purpose!

I think back to my pre-Porsche owing days (all 58 years of them of which i can recall about 50) and what I said to lucky owners, I told them the car was beautiful and wished them well.
Good call chuck j.
I stopped for gas the other night -- yet another unsolicited conversation with a porsche admirer. He didnt have one but his dentist does -- like i care.
Its his dream car.
Its just an awkward moment for me as i am 20 years his junior and he asks how much it goes for. I told him i dont remember but its worth every penny.
