What a blast!!
What a blast!!
I dropped by my local dealer yesterday and asked the sales guy (Craig) if I could test drive one of two demo models, which the dealer has been trying to sell for a few months now. My purpose for wanting to specifically drive a demo was because I knew they would be experienced cars.
So I chose the one closest to the model I would consider buying, an S. This one had 11,000 miles on the odometer. With that many miles I knew that:
1.it would be unencumbered by mileage break-in restrictions and
2. with that many “hard” miles I could test the integrity of the build quality of the car.
Craig tossed me the keys, showed me a few things about the car and said bring it back before 5 PM. (it was10:30 AM) The racing yellow S was equipped with most of the goodstuff including PDK, sports exhaust, chrono, sports steering wheel, sunroof, black leather, bose and 18 way adjustable seats. So off Iwent in auto mode, sports plus.
From there I took it down some choppy roads and then made a mad dash for the freeway and then to the mountains for some canyon driving. Once I hit the freeway and had completely familiarized myself with the car I engaged manual mode. Once the engine and tires were sufficiently warmed up I gave it the whip. My oh my, you guys weren't kidding about this car and its ability to put the power to the ground. I was impressed. Acceleration was brisk and with PDK you are ensured of being in the meat of the power band at all times. Stability at high speeds was very good. This car is very predictable and relatively easy to drive quickly.
On the way back a few annoying gremlins surfaced: squeaks from both driver and passenger doors and one from the area of the cup holders. Other than that the body, hardware and interior was in great shape.

Finally someone who was able to do a proper test drive!!
So many posts of people saying "test drove the 991 and it's soft, slow...a GT...bla, bla, bla....
I always think, all you have to do is put it in sport+ and drop the hammer.
It's a damn beast! man that thing moves!
Sure it doesn't rattle the teeth out of your head but that's a good thing in my book, I got so tired of the ouwhhh argggggh owwwwh sounds I used to make with the 996 and 997.
I was almost more a verbalization for the car itself than for me... to such a degree I would get mad with the type of abuse I put my 911 through and in anything other than nice country roads it took the fun out of driving it to a certain degree.
No, I love the 991 and it's dual personality.
Can't wait for spring!
Thanks for the great post, I almost forgot what I'm waiting for... not anymore!

It's really the only way to test a high performance car and there wasn't much risk to the dealer given that it was a demo with over 11,000 miles. If I had wanted to test drive a new one, I'm sure it would have been a completely different story.
