Older kids in the back of a 991

First post here. Hi everyone!

About to get a base 991, moving from a 987.2 Cayman S and more recently a 981 Boxster S. Never having had the luxury of rear "seats" prior to this, wanted to ask a question of parents here who drive with their kids in 991s.

I have two kids... a 5 year old and a 10. I know there are numerous options for the 5 yr old in terms of narrower child seats et al from the searches I've done. My question is really about the 10 year old. During a test drive, I could see that she was a little too tall for the rear tokens... not that she couldn't fit in them, but the back of the seat only comes up to her neck.

I've read that some parents here and in other forums are still happily ferrying their 12/13 year olds and I'm just wondering... are you driving them around with no form of head restraints whatsoever? Are are you using some sort of narrown and more importantly slim profile booster of sorts that doesn't add too much bulk to the forward distance of the sitting position? If so, what brand and model?

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Serious question...why not use the front seat? Isn't it safer?

I took my 13 year old (5' 1") out for a test drive last week in a 991 C2S CAB. She wasn't really cramped but it was only a 15 min ride. The salesman was shorter than me but even with me (6' 2") in the passenger seat she seemed fine (...maybe she was too concerned with her hair blowing everywhere and not her leg room - she is a teenager after all)

Yes it would be if it was available. I was thinking more about those times when my wife is in the front passenger seat.

Yes, i understand but the question is really about head restraints in the back for older kids 10 years and up... Are parents doing something (with high back boosters or what not) or going without any restraints?

Am worried about rear collisions and whiplash for instance.

I really can't imagine putting an entire family of 4 into a 911. I very rarely take my wife and son all in the 911 at once. Seems too risky. We have a Cayenne S that is fast and cool and safer.

Yeah, I agree Super Adjuster. I have an X5 that does the more sedate people carrying. But there are occasions (shorter jaunts) where I would love to bring the wife AND kids out in a sports car, not to mention the kids sulking about having to slum it in the SUV!

I know I can put a carefully selected (for width) forward-facing child seat for my 5 year old and I would have good peace of mind with sorta standard-issue safety gear. But the question remains what to do for my 10 year old. She fits in the seat fine in terms of leg room and belt position across her shoulders and chest, but there's nothing behind her head. Still hoping to hear what 991 parents do about that...

I have put my all family of 4 few times (wife, 11yr old, 8 yr old)...nothing wrong with that. It's a very safe car, just get it and enjoy it. For longer trips, we take our Lexus gx.

Hey Fester! Awesome to "meet" you. I remember gawking at the photos of your 991 (shot along with another unit sporting the ducktail) some weeks back. Your pics have found a permanent home on my iPad's drool gallery. Legendary!

So really, you drive your kids around (granted, only sometimes) without any head restraints for them?

Thx.. nice meeting you too

Yes don't think there's anything wrong with that. Kids are thrilled to sit on the backseats and hear amazing sounds. Remember all classic cars (esp muscle) are without head restraints too

Yep. My daughter is still short enough that her head isn't above the back all the way, my sons are taller than that, but it's just around town (25 mph) really.

It would be sort of cool if the seats had a pop-up/slide-up headrest to extend them if needed, but as is I'm not going to look for a booster for my 5'8" son. And yes, it's a bit cramped in back for him, but the great thing at his age is... He doesn't care, he's riding in the Porsche! (And to clarify, normally he's in front, but he has jumped in back too when needed...)
