RF Tire Blow Out

Long story but I'll keep as short as possible. We're shipping our car to the Porsche dealer in Portland, ME via reliable Carriers and are flying there on 5/18. We'll take a couple of weeks to drive back home, taking scenic routes, visiting family, etc.

In preparation for shipping, I spent a whole week-end rubbing on the car, polishing, waxing, removed the wheels to clean the inside and inspect tires, you get the picture. All is perfect and I parked the car in the garage with plans of not touching it until we ship it to make sure nothing goes wrong.

fast forward 3 weeks, beautiful day in Memphis Saturday and we're going to our favorite eatery for dinner. What the hell, let's take the 991, drop the top and enjoy our evening. You guessed it, on the way home, I hit a vicious pothole and blew out the front tire. Thankfully, I don't think the rim is damaged, which is amazing considering how hard we hit. I was changing lane and had zero chance of avoiding it.

Called Porsche Roadside assistance and they sent a rollback to get me within an hour. Towed it home and getting (4) new shoes installed tomorrow. I decided to replace all tires and will keep the other (3) as spares. I have 4,500 miles on the car and the thought of having (1) new tire wigs me out. Yeah, I know, I have issues . Silver lining is I have Wheel & Tire protection, so the RF tire is free. As an aside, this is the 1st time I've ever bought W&T protection and have used it twice so far. I got my money back.

Anyway, when I scheduled the move with Reliable, they could not tell me exactly when they would pick it up. As Murphy would have it, they called Monday and wanted to get the car on Tuesday morning......uurghh! So now I hope they can still make it happen. If not, we'll leave a day early and haul *** to Maine!

Wow. What a story. Glad you had W&T insurance. Have heard a few stories now about it coming in handy. While I have it, have not used it thus far, and hope to never have to but glad to know things will be taken care of should something happen. Have fun on your trip. Car is gorgeous btw. Love the wheels.

Since pictures are worth a 1,000 words, here's the tire after a hard impact with a deep pothole. Luckily, and surprisingly, no rim damage.

Good news it worked out you, thanks for sharing. Were these 20"s or 19"s on the car. Does insurance also cover the mounting and balancing?

I am not one for extra Porsche insurance, but W&T insurance seems to be a no brainer with the larger and large wheels and some of our terribly maintained roads.

Why didn't you just use the Porsche Fix-a-Flat goo that we get, maybe throw in a plug for good measure just kidding of course. I would have just replaced both front tires as the fronts and rears wear differently anyway. Sounds like a great trip and well worth shipping out to save time. Have fun and watch for pot holes

RF means run flat? 991 uses run flat?

Front at such low miles are rarely worn much. Replacing the set is overkill.

I would have your alignment check!

Update

Wheel & Tire Insurance covers all costs associated with tire failure, including tow, mounting, balancing, taxes, etc.

Those are standard 20" tires.

RF means Right Front.
