Advice: 991(2013) vs 997(2011)

Hi, I'm at a crossroads here. I had planned on trying to make a deal on a 2011 cpo 997 at a semi local dealer. Asking 70k with the following options: Carpet in Deviating Color, Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), Self Dimming Mirrors, Heated Front Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, 19'' 911 Turbo II Wheels, Wheel Centers with Full Color Porsche Crest, Ventilated Front Seats, Rear Park Assist System, Sport Chrono Package Plus, Navigation, BOSE(R) Surround Sound System, XM(R) Satellite Radio Receiver, Interior Package Makassar, 3 Spoke Multi Functional Steering Wheel Makassar, Model Designation ''911'', 12-Way Power Seats, Comfort Package, Infotainment Package, Center Console Painted in Exterior Color
warranty expires 4/2017 Blue on Tan 18k miles
I was hoping to buy and put enough down to keep pymts lower than 1k mo by using my credit union and financing at 2.6% for 72mos. 956ish otd tax inc.

However i ran into a lease deal on a new 2013 991 pdk with:
693 - 6 disc CD/DVD changer
690 - SiriusXM(R) & HD Radio(R) rcvr
680 - BOSEŠ Surround Sound-System
653 - Sunroof in glass
640 - Sport Chrono Package
603 - Porsche Dynamic Light System
446 - Wheel caps color Porsche crest
423 - 20-inch Carrera S wheel
ZAB - Ornamental Porsche Crest
322 - Power Sport seats (left)
321 - Power Sport seats (right)
276 - Automatically dimming mirrors
250 - Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)
P38 - Premium Package w 14-way seats
P37 - BOSEŠ Audio Package
P06 - Power Sport Seats (14-way)
342 - Seat heating (front)

msrp=101500.00

Dealer is trying to figure out the metrics to get me at the 899+tax lease with 6700 cap red.

This is a very large financial commitment and i'd be happy with both cars. 991 is epic. I'd like to think i'd buy it out in 2 years when lease is up but i may be scared off by the residual value. 997 is priced slightly under KBB cpo retail. With 10k down i'm covering taxes and a little cap. I'm hoping to get it around 66k.

there's alot of negativity regarding the c2 899.99 lease and it looked good at first but i'm not thinking about the longer term issues that i may not be aware of.

In any case i'm looking from some experienced advice on this.

991 I was thinking along the same lines, they are two different cars. The 991 is a significant step forward in my opinion.

No comparison between 997 vs 991. Pay a lot for a 997 or a little more for a 991... no brainer. The joy and feeling driving the 991 will be worth the difference several times over.

I've had 2 997s and 1 991. The 991 is quieter and more sophisticated. I like the 991 better- by far:
1. Faster
2. Better corner balancing
3. Quieter
4. Better mileage
5. More stable
6. More room
7. Lighter
8. Great new paint
9. Better creature comforts (door chirp, GPS, etc)
10. Better dash
11. Better looks
12. Better ride
13. Warranty
14. Higher confidence it is undamaged / repaired

i was in a similar situation. ended up leasing because the residual was a little too good to pass up without tying up company/investment capital.

bottom line, i don't think the car i leased $103k msrp, $96k negotiated will be worth the 75% porsche financial is allowing. if not, i should be able to buy a private-party two year vehicle for around, or less than, $70k. (and i get to drive the heck out of the leased vehicle without worry )

I won't discuss the lease vs buy choice because I have already made it clear that I pound the pavement on a cash purchase .. or No CAR !! Pretty simple .. really .

Regarding the two cars .. the dealbreaker on the 997 is the PDK . The 991 PDK unit is far superior to that in the 997 .

Plus the new vs used is a separate issue . No one can make this decision except for you .

Personally if I had no cars at all and was going to buy one car I would wrestle betten a used Turbo S and a new 991S . Even though the Turbo S 997 has the inferior PDK one can not compare the usefulness of how turbo boost is enhanced by PDK . In addition the power difference between the 991S and 997 Turbo S would probably point me to the Turbo .

the last thing you want to do is lease for 2 years then buy. the porsche residual is way too high. you'll be paying more in lease interest (money factor) and then paying too much on the buy out.

Thanks everyone,

I appreciate the feedback. Especially about the buyout post lease. I was strongly considering that option. Considering that ill be dumping 31k + maint into a leased 2013 in 24 months I'm now leaning towards the cpo 11 or waiting a couple of years for a 2012/3 model.

I had another dealer offer a 13 for 878. Mo but I haven't seen the details. The car was 98k discounted to 92k. I'll evaluate that offer when I see the details.

However what I'm taking away from this thread is that the 13s are worth the wait.

Feel free to reply with any other thoughts.

I'm wondering how the stock brakes/tires are holding up. Are they wearing out by 30k miles?

Not as nice amenity wise as the 11 997 but its a 991 right...?

the 997 dealer was asking 69k, i'm offering 66k
the 991 dealer listed the 991 for 76 on Craigslist but also listed it for higher on Car trader and other locations with it at 85k on their website. I called then they said the 76 was a mistake but that they would honor it for me.

when thinking 66 was alot 76 seems huge...about 150mo more.

i make about 90k a year so this is a very big deal to me.

what do you think? should i hold out a while longer? or pull...?

KBB says $75K. Be careful that it hasn't been damaged and repaired. Other than that, make your best deal- and good luck!!

Thanks Chuck,

I ran it through what KBB has and I get 85k. It was taken in as a trade and then took a few months to replace the exhaust per the recall.

If I can work it all out I hope to pick It up tomorrow.

I don't know if I'd be buying either of those cars if I were you.

My math: 90k - 17.5k (401k plan) = 72.5k - 35% tax = 47k / 12 = 4k per month.

Personally I wouldn't spend 1/4 of my monthly income on a car.

I think I found your car ..asking 79 and change on auto trader . It's been there awhile so it didn't "just pop up."

The negatives -
1) Car was only owned for one month . Why ? Also carfax lists the first known mileage as over 4K miles . Was it a demo ?

2) Car has PDK yet lacks sport chono = incomplete system in my opinion . Why pay 4+k for PDK and not get the full monte ?

3) It's a 2012 and many are placing orders for 2014 cars .

The positives -

1) many 6speed members have posted very favorable comments over the years about the dealership .

2) It's clearly priced to sell . It's unbelievable how much these cars have depreciated . A one year old base car in the 70's .

3) It was NOT owned in a weather event region . I notice a lot of used cars which seems to have been traded or sold either after Hurricane Sandy or some other weather related event . Keep in mind that a repaired car with moderate water damage woild not be a salvage tilte and iut may not even show on carfax . This car looks clean in that regard.

The doubts

Most of the used 12 cars seem to have some type of open recall info . I find it odd that this one has none which leads me to wonder why . Did it take since February to fix it ?
