Rearview Mirror for Radar Detector Display

I am ready to pull the trigger on an Escort 9500CI. After meeting with the dealer twice and looking at all of the options for mounting the display I am leaning towards having it put into the rearview mirror. It seems like an ideal location and there is a company who installs the unit inside of the mirror.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with this - especially with a Cab?

If I don't hear of any issues I will proceed and post my thoughts after installation and use.

Thanks

I do not have such an install but I have heard that at times, with the top down, you cannot see the alerts because of glare. Also, make sure your audio alerts are loud enough to hear with the top down.

I considered the mirror display as well, my installer advised against it, claiming it was a waste of money ($475), even though he would have made a profit on the sale of the mirror display. My cab display is installed at the very top of the interior windshield trim, just left of the rear view mirror. Controls are in ashtray. It is a very clean professional looking install.

I opted to have the display mounted on the steering column in my Cab. But discover I have another problem. With polarized sunglasses I can't see the display unless I have it on its brightest setting.

Same problem with dark black/gray polarizes lens, solved problem by going to brown/amber lens, they work perfectly.

Thanks for the info. I have been told that the red display has less washout in the bright sun then the blue (although I like the blue look at night better). The steering column mount is definitely my 2nd choice if the mirror does not work well. It is pricey but if we were really concerned about that would we be driving these cars

I'm very interested in your experience. I want the 9500ci installed by a dealer in my 981S and Cincinnati is the closest P dealer to me that does installs. It's about 6 hours round trip, so I'm trying to gather as much info as possible before committing to an entire day (or two) for the process. There's an independent shop in Columbus with factory trained techs/"full warranty" (but i want it on the unit AND the car). They also have not installed one in a 981 to date.
I would worry about glare on the mirror also in a cab.
FWIW, I bought a Solo S3 to tide me over while I decide and it's a pretty nice unit, though not at the level of the 9500ci, of course. I make a loop of painters' blue tape and stick it on the dash, storing it in the (tiny) console, blue tape up. The blue tape leaves no residue but holds the unit securely at up to 0.8 Gs so far.
Thanks for any updated info! Feel free to PM or reply here - I'll be checking back...

Well that proves that theory wrong, have you tried black/gray?

Got your PM, but I'm not allowed to answer until I surpass 15 posts(!)
I spend more time on Rennlist, so that might be a while.
But thanks for the info!

The color of the polarization is not the problem. The angle of the polarization is. Try a different brand of polarized sunglasses. Also you can buy polarized film to put on the display. The film will offset the polarization angle allowing use of your current sunglasses.

I have the radar mirror in a hardtop S. I got blue, I would go with red. Sunglasses are a problem. In my car the audio signal is the most important. If you are going fast the decision is hit the brakes now not let me read the display and make a decision. I only use the display to change settings. You might want to think more about where to mount the single LED alert. It is easier to put high in the dash where it will get your attention. I would also focus on the speaker mount to get the loudest audio possible.

Thanks, Detroit Shooter, for the feedback. I was leaning towards putting the LED in the instrument cluster on the dash near where the A-pillar comes in. These were the dealers suggestion as I don't really want to cut or drill anything if possible.

Where did you put the controls? I was thinking about putting it on the left side since I have a MT.

Here is 9500ci display mount on my cab, very clean, no drilling all wires behind the interior window trim, just another alternate consideration for you.
