Do as the Russians do
The Blackvue range of cameras seems to be the most mature and reliable dash cams. I have tried a few and settled on these. $200-300 from Amazon.
BlackVue Wi-Fi DR500GW-HD
BlackVue DR400G-HD
The 500 model adds wifi support so you can play the video back on your smartphone but really the 400 is all you need.
I put one in the front under the mirror and one off to the side in the rear. With 64GB cards I get about 4-5 days recorded. They delete the oldest recording as the card gets full.
I also installed the Blackvue Power magic pro this time so the camera continues to record (movement triggered only) for 12 hours after I park the car.
There is software that comes with them that gives you all sorts of info on your bad driving but the important thing is the videos are clear and sharp (1080p)
I also enjoy checking the video from time to time and seeing my neighbors checking out my car when they think I am not around : )

One last quick question: So, you can leave it plugged into the lighter socket when you aren't in the car and it will flip on to record if it detects motion?
Is it easy to flip around if I wanted it to face the door window if I mount it by the rear mirror?
Can you run it on batteries? Trying to avoid the cable....?
I really like the size and the quality seems good. Plus, with wifi, I don't need to dismount to view the videos.

You can buy the power magic box you can have that continue to supply power to it for 6 12 or 24 hours after you stop the car.
You can rotate the camera to face inside...

Thanks again and maybe sending you a pm with questions
I assume we're talking about monitoring for the purpose of "catching" whom ever just smashed out one of the windows?
Just wondering if its worth the trouble. I mean even with a crystal clear image of a person's face captured by the camera, what is the likelihood that the police would ever be able to track that person down?
Car jacking is pretty drastically deprioritized in most areas, much less a smash and grab or vandalism.
Though I think you could possibly create a deterrent if you were to make the presence of the camera known, without it looking tacky.
