winter wheels on, all good
October seems to be the perfect month for swapping wheels up here. It's getting consistently wet and cool (low 50's in the mornings lately) but it's not too cold to get outside and do a little home Porsche work.
The jack points are fairly easy to spot under the car if you have an idea of what to look for. I double-check the manual, sometimes forget the correct torque for the wheel lugs (118 lb/foot).
It's wonderful when something just works. I put the Michelin Pilot Alpin 4's on, I drove around the block, and the car asked me if I had switched the wheels. I told her yes, they are winter 20's. She thought about it for a moment, and then reported my tire pressure as 30/30 on the fronts and 38/38 for the rears. Not too bad after sitting on an elevated wheel holder all summer.
I like having a wheel holder on the garage wall, keeps things out of the way and keeps the tires pressured up correctly (mostly). I haven't even looked to see what the suggested pressure is for these yet, but I'd bet they are very close if not spot on when warmed up.
Anyway, took 45 minutes and I have no power tools. Now..to clean the summer wheels really well before putting them up for the winter.
ohwell, it can't be all fun right!Last edited by nicoli; Oct 25, 2013 at 04:07 PM.
I changed to my winter wheels in mid Oct thru mid May. By mid May the winter trash was off the road, pot holes filled, and the mornings were warm enough. I found waiting didn't add much wear. I could never go back to all seasons again.
Just had mine installed today. Dealer stores the tires for me and charges $100 to install. They look over the car, check the brakes and other stuff All in all, I'm pleased to have them store and install them.
What I'm not crazy about is the loss of handling with winter tires

Come on...cleaning is fun, isn't it??
Nice write up man. Living in part of Cali where there's no snow/not much rain..it's all good majority of the time, just perfect. Enjoying my summer tires!

I am. Summers on 20". The dealer recommended the 19"

Frankly I didn't want to screw around with aftermarket stuff on a new car.
They are wearing well. Handling as expected - not as good as the summer tires.
