a Trip to the Glen

The pics here are from a trip to Watkins Glen in October. The first pic is the trip up, second the trip back and the G-meter is at the track.

The combination of ability and efficiency in this car is just amazing. An average return speed of 70mph for over 235 miles and still getting over 29 MPG.

This was my second trip to the Glen in this car and I will admit that I have been reluctant to really push it as I don't carry track insurance. However, the 83 year old Aussie that put up these G-numbers didn't seem to have that in mind.
In his words, "for a street car this is f***** unbelievable."

Tires were 19" pilot Super Sports, everything else was pure from the factory.

Was this a PCA Zone 1 track day? Do they still do the 48 Hours of Watkins Glen DE event each year? That used to be a lot of fun.

Did you run through the "boot" or was that section closed off?

This was a Niagara Region DE. A very well run event.

I do not know about the 48 DE.

This was with the boot.

With out the boot is the NASCAR Fast Track configuration…boring!!! The Boot is the best part.

I have been to the Glen twice with the 991, its damn fast there and so easy to drive, I was quicker in the 991 then my modded M3.

The Glen is my favorite track.

Sweet; that's an impressive set of numbers, both on and off-track. I'm also amazed at our 991s' dual personality.

How did you feel on track? I took my 991 to Willow Springs here in California a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing experience.

I had a 2007 997S and a 2007 GT3 both of which I have run at the Glen. Like all modern cars the tendency is towards understeer. These cars had that to varying degrees. I had the GT3 corner balanced and it helped some, but the front tires would definitely work harder meaning some understeer still was there. The 991S had to be pushed much harder to find that understeer was predominant. It is soooo neutral and confidence inspiring.

Since the Glen has mostly right hand turns, normally in other cars the left side tires always had a higher pressure after a run. Not so on the 991. The tire pressure has always been the same. It appears that the PDCC moves a fair amount of the load to the inside,,,,somehow..

Sounds like you had a great time. Willow Springs is also mostly right-hand turns, and I experienced the same thing as you regarding the tire pressure (and wear).

I haven't tracked any other 911s before, but I can certainly understand the nature of our 991s compared to previous-gen cars. I was impressed with the overall neutrality through corners and braking. Can't wait to go back.

Cheers,

Chris
