Jack or Ramp

Just wondering for those who change their own oil, what do you use, a floor jack or a ramp? What ramp or floor jack are most people using?

I have both, but use ramps a lot as if you just need the back or front up, it seems to be the easiest, as to kind, I built my own using 2x8, I got to make them exactly the way I wanted, I built 4 so I can get the entire car up some if I want, works well for what I am doing. Still trying to convince the wife I need a lift in the garage.

I don't like ramps. I use a jack and really like my jack points if I'm going to get under it.

A lot of the cheap ramps you find at Autozone, etc. will not work with a car as low as the 911. You better double check or get your own made if you want to go that route.

I use the rhino ramps, extra wide for P tires, I have a plethora of elevations on my property,,no problem getting my big butt under there

Not sure if it is a good idea for me to post this here...

But since I ran across this:

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=876771

I might be paranoid, but I am not getting my self under a jacked up car. My apologies in advance to all the DIYers.

I bought a couple of 2"x8" or 2x10s at Home Depot a number of years ago and cut them to three different lengths and nailed them together. You drive up about three levels and Voila! I don't have many concerns that the wood is going to disintegrate. YMMV.

Lifts can be cheaper than you think and even available second hand. Look around. Mine was FREE from a fellow club member who wanted a larger lift. I was lucky. It is a drive-over pad lift, low enough for even my lowered 993 to park over it.

I used to be constantly rebuilding a Porsche to make money selling later and thus I spent a lot of time under one changing engines, clutches, etc. I always worried about the car falling off the jack stands and after a while put safety jacks. I really wish I had had that ramp!!

I also use the Rino ramps (12000lbs). They seem to work well with our cars and Autozone has them on sale this month for $40

Sorry for the late reply. There is a piston that runs through about half of the middle of the lift. But it's never proven to be of any issue as far as clearance. You can usually work around it pretty easily.
