Are Dealer Swaps common
Hi All -
The day approaches when i will finally, finally have a 991 in my garage. I currently have a 2013 S4 and have come from a long line of Audis. I love them, and have considered an R8, but after several lengthy test drives, including a 2 day R8 loaner from my dealer to get me over the edge, i believe the 991 is the right car for me.
I have enjoyed my communications with my local dealer, and if I were ordering a car, I'd certainly give them the business. However, I have found the car I want, about 250 miles away. It's basically optioned exactly how I'd order it, color and all.
I am tempted to go make a deal on it, but I've enjoyed a healthy relationship with my Audi dealer over the years and it has benefited me. It's unlikely this is my last Porsche, and I recognize the importance of a dealer relationship.
I'll probably go ask them if they can do it, but are dealer swaps within a few hundred miles common in the Porsche world? Will I likely get the same deal on it via a swap vs. direct purchase?
Any advice and experience is very much appreciated. I anxiously await the day my 991 is in the garage!

Swaps are not common but not because dealers are unwilling to do it...more because people are willing to wait and order what they want. If you found one you want there is no harm in telling your dealer. The key to success will be if your dealer has something the other dealer wants and if you are willing to pay an extra $500-$750 in freight to ship from the other dealer. I have done both car swaps for my cars before and also build swaps....my dealer traded a car for a near term build slot when I wanted to build my 991 base. So yes...tell your dealer you found the car you want and where and ask them if they can get it....
Thanks - I think at the very least I get a little bit of credit for trying to bring my local dealer into the transaction, even if they can't make it happen. I've got no problem paying the freight if they can make it work.
I'm terribly impatient with these types of things and the thought of waiting 3-4 months for a car makes me break out in a cold sweat.
This is a heavily optioned car and it's freakish how close it is to the one I configured online all the way down to the heated steering wheel and power folding mirrors.

Dealer swaps happen but is not that common in the Porsche world.
I think you're doing the right thing by giving your dealer a shot first then moving onto a direct buy if they can't entertain the sale.

i got my Panamera as a dealer swap. it is no big deal... it happens all the time. Depending on the deal u make, they will not even charge u for the shipping- they did not for mine. I still got 7% off last year.
I think it REALLY depends if your dealer has something the other wants...and then there's the shipping to other dealer too. Dealers also have visibility of cars about to be or in production and a port swap can happen again, if your dealer has something they want too. This is what I did for current car but, I'm building my own Turbo now scheduled for 1st week March dealer delivery.

Maybe it's a Michigan thing. My dealer said swaps were no problem and they always flatbed.
I also think dealer swaps are common unless it's a limited allocation vehicle. Back when I 'Thought' I wanted a GT3, my dealer said their allocations were gone but they could probably swap for one. Most dealers have preferred dealers to swap with, someone they have done this before with, are close by and they develop a swap relationship with. For them it becomes a win win, like extending their limited inventory. PCNA encourages it as do all dealers. But it's harder across country and sure helps if your dealer has something to offer that they want.
sgroer, I was in the same situation with my loyalty to our local dealer and an out of state car. No problem, they made it happen. They do usually have to trade them another Porsche or an allotment, it seems.
