Yet another reason to garage the 991
I have a 20K Generac standby generator to power the entire house. Runs on natural gas. Haven't really had much problem with it over the last 5 years. The maintenance is pretty steep though. Costs $900 to have it serviced 4 times a yr.
We're surviving. As my wife says "we are having first world issues" - no electricity internet or cable. Hanging out with the generator running and propane fireplace "roaring." Bay window sealed with wood probably has to be replaced, deck looks like it needs a lot of work after the tree was removed, gutters , roof issues. Insurance adjuster stopping by Sunday. Could have been a lot worse considering I was three feet away from the window when the tree came through it
I replaced the clear side markers with LEDs today. Looks good Car still in garage.

Buying another gas can and four action packed novels. For Thursday and however long I'm sitting here

Seriously, though, a Kohler 30kW is one of the best investments we've ever made. Hopefully this will be the last big one before Spring...
Already looked into the kohler and having an electrician stop by to add up the watt requirements.
Great. We opted for the 30kW, which borders on commercial sizing, but we wanted it to be able to run the whole house. IMO, not worth it to stress out about which outlets work and which don't when you're running off the generator for several days.
Just added a generac 20kw connected to the natural gas line. Bought and installed during the recent power outage. I snapped and drove down to the a NJ HD and bought the generac 20kw and had it loaded into my range rover. I was running a Briggs and Stratton 6250w portable for 3 days and that kept basically the whole house (6,500sq ft) with electricity. The 20kw should allow for ac use as well as everything else we need.

No natural gas lines in the Santa Monica Mts where I live, and I don't want to store diesel, so after the '07 Malibu Cyn fire knocked out power for a week, I had an 18kw Generac LPG generator installed. We already had a 500 gal LPG tank on the property, and the 18kw generator was the largest air-cooled size available. It runs two houses with AC on, and self tests every week. Oil changes/tune-ups are trivial so no maintenance costs so far.
