Does driving a Porsche ever make you feel socially awkward?
Does driving a Porsche ever make you feel socially awkward?
I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin and Porsches are not common up here.
I am a rather quiet person.
I have driven a Porsche for a few years, and I bought one because I find them beautiful, fast, fun to drive, iconic and stylish. I love owning one and driving one, but I dont particularly like to be seen in it. (My car is a black coupe. I'd never drive a convertible. )
I have driven a 997 for a few years and recently got a 991. However, now when I drive my new 991 I find people are often signaling me to roll down the windows to talk to me, etc.
I honestly don't enjoy this -- its quite awkward -- because I do not want to sound like a jerk in my voice, so I am often overly nice to people.. but overall it just is an awkward experience.
I usually try to kill people with kindness and not sound like an obnoxious guy in a fancy car.
Does anyone else have these issues?
I mean I enjoy it when other car people appreciate it, but I dont like it when people are sort of indirectly bothering me about it.
How do you guys feel? Maybe some of you enjoy it? If so that is fine. Its just not really my style. But I guess driving a car like this makes this happen. Maybe I'll tint the windows.

Well I do drive a convertible so I guess I don't have any problems with it. I enjoy the car for all the same reasons as you, but I love the droptop. Most of my experience is people loving the look of the car too. I get LOTS of thumbs up and random comments from strangers like "Beautiful car sir" and stuff like that. I've had at least 2 kids film me with their iphones. Funny. I'm not really in it for the attention, just the fun of the car but I don't mind the attention either. Part of the experience I guess.
I say enjoy if for what it is. It does create a little buzz. There's nothing wrong with that. My view is if I bought this car solely to pose, then I'm a ******. But I didn't so it's fine.

I drive 911's because they blend in...normally. I moved to Milwaukee from Atlanta where 911's are a dime a dozen and most people cannot tell one from the other. I've owned a lot of other cars (Lambo, Ferrari, Lotus, Viper, etc) and I was not comfortable driving them (expect the Viper which everybody seemed to like). The attention I got in the exotics was outrageous and I did not like it.
I drive my 991S Cab almost daily in the summer in Milwaukee. It gets a lot more attention here because there are so few 911's here in general. Drive it to Chicago and nobody cars...
I'm just polite and talk cars if someone wants to talk...

I feel the same way and am also usually a quite person. My Dad has a mint 57 red T-Bird and whenever I drive it everyone flocks to the car like it is a magnet and that does not bother me at all. So I think there must be some type of guilt with the Porsche stereo types.

next time get an anthracite brown metallic / luxor beige one and I guarantee strangers' reactions will be far fewer as you roll , with most of the complimentary nods coming from knowledgable boomer Prius drivers !

Or people just looking to ask questions and compliment the car?
I suppose certain parts of the city differ from others as well. Lower income areas would garner more attention.
Some people give a nice appreciative nod as if they know porsche.
Some people give a genuine compliment.
However,
Some people ask a neutral question which seems just to feel me out or something, or to kind of pimp me a bit.
Some people say rude stuff .. rare but it happens.

Walk around with a woman who looks like a stripper, you'll get the same attention or even worse.
Like I said, some seek it, others would rather not have it.
