Has anyone replaced theirs with aftermarket? And is it brighter?

AZN Optics is infamous around these parts
Yes, it will be appreciably brighter, and also whiter giving you a much cleaner look. Rear plates use a set of 36mm festoon LEDs, and you'll need canbus versions to prevent codes. Let us know if we can help you out with our plug and play replacement.

I hear that a lot... but not like plates are that hard to read anyways and it's not like you're running from the cops if they light you up.

Turns out OP was looking for lights for his 2014 not the 2011 I thought he was asking for that was listed in his sig. 2013+ models has integrated LED rear plate lights that require housing change and some rewiring to replace.

Here's an example of what our LEDs look like in rear plate:

This is true but brighter lights would only help the speed and red light cameras.

Those cameras can easily capture your plates with dingy halogens. The flash lights you up to the point you could run no lights and it'd still get your plate, so LEDs don't matter in any law enforcement situations. They will aesthetically help the car look better though. That's why you see newer models with integrated LEDs oem.
