New Tires for my TT
New Tires for my TT
Was just told by the dealership that with only 9k miles on my '02 I need a new set of rear tires - down to the bars on the inside.
A couple of questions:
1) Does this sound right, with only 9k miles on the car?
2) No plans to track the car, and just drive it (somewhat) normally, should I stick w/ OE tires (P-Zero Asimmetrico), or go w/ something else?
3) Any ideas on a good place to get tires? Either online or in South Bay Area?
Thanks in advance........Rich

Hi. I have gone though a *silly* number of sets of
tires in the 8000 miles my car has run... For street
use, the OEMs are fine, as are any alternates
recommended by Porsche or Tire Rack etc.
The best way is to buy from Tire Rack www.tirerack.com
(a 6speed sponsor!) and then find a tire shop you trust to do the
mount and balance.

I agree with Joe--the rears can go pretty fast especially if you like to drive hard. I'm replacing mine (PZero's) tomorrow because they're starting to get squirrelly and there's a slow leak in the driver's side rear to boot. And they're just getting to the wear bars on the right side rear tire.
I actually just bought the car w/ 8k miles on it. Checked the pressure and was about 30psi all the way around when I bought it. Who knows how the previous owner drove it.....
I'm now running the car w/ recommended tire pressure though - 36 in front, 44 in back (other than my recently noticed slow leak on passenger side, which regularly reduces the pressure.....).

I ran my Asimetricos with about 33 F 36R , the ride and grip seemed better at the lower pressure.
Most rears normally wear out on the inside due to the negative camber.
You can keep your fronts if you replace the rears with Asimetricos, But almost all other tires are less noisy and harsh than Asimetricos.

I've run higher negative camber on my last two Porsches, and both of them had high wear on the outside edge of both rear tires (stock pressures).
Strange.
Strange.
