I have a simple and straight forward question
The thread is pathetic, just an excuse to start an ****ty arguement as per feckin usual on this forum. Sad any time of the year but especially when we are about to break for Christmas/Holidays, very sad indeed.
Merry what!
Merry what!

or wait, would that be

?
It's weird Stevo, this stuff reminds me of the ati vs nvidia arguments on the net back when I was doing all the PC stuff... People seem to get almost religious about this stuff. Scary but what can you do. Merry sexmas to you pal.
Good thread Craig. Although I believe you're more than a bit condescending and have motives of your own, I think the information we've all learned on the last page has been of tremendous value to this community. I agree that vendors who make statements - and particularly Vivid who markets constantly - should be held accountable and not be so sensitive to some constructive criticism and questioning. They brought it on themselves IMHO, and to tell you the truth I still find their answers a little evasive sadly. If you're going to advertise to the community constantly and act like an enthusiast (regardless of whether you are a paying supporter or not - see Sharkwerks, Imagine, Proto, Evoms, et al), at least be a little more straightforward and not so "salesmany" IMO. So in the end, it's the cable that "powers" all of these cars, and to some degree the transport mechanism. Great, let's move on.
Either way, some good info here. We're all on the same team guys, and don't take things so much to heart - unless you do have something to hide or some shady motives. Happy holidays everyone, and here's to a great 2008 for all!

I'm selling my 996tt to buy a car I can tune myself. Yes, I have a lot of experience, and no, I don't mistake myself for a tuning god, or even a tuning pro. But I can make *my* car run it's best. This thread, other than the "what softronic does" post, is pure rubbish.
Shiv from Vishnu told me a few months back that the 996tt tuning cabal is about to collapse. It'll happen too late for me, but for the rest of you waiting for the dust to settle, I bet you're going to have more options next year. It's already started.

Jeff
For anyone interested, here is an example of how Softronic and Protomotive are working together for my tuning.
I will be adding the protomotive intake to my car next month. This will place the MAF just before the throttle body, monitoring charged air, as opposed to just after the intake filter monitoring fresh air. The car will require a new tune. I will be installing the pipes myself and Todd K suggested that I buy the durametric software and cable, then contact Scott at Softronic to activate the Durametric cable. This will allow Todd to send me the proper file for the new intake system that I will be installing via email and upload it to my ECU. One it is loaded, I am to drive the car, datalog it with the Durametric and send the file back to Todd. Todd will review it, make any changes required to optimize the file and email back the revised version to overwrite the base file. This can go on as many times as neccessary to get things perfect.
I have already contacted Scott and he helped me activate the Durametric cable a few weeks ago...Now, I just need to get the pipes on, re-fab the IC's, etc. and I'll give it a try.

Craig,
if your thread was meant to "among other things, is to flesh out the underlying facts and determine the veracity of the claim. " then why ask the 6speed community members to respond with hearsay and give you exactly what you implied Vivid did... "gross generalizations".
I skimmed thru the the thread and I don't see Todd nor Softronic responding... if you really were interested in the real answers why didn't you pick up the phone this time, like you did many times before, and call Todd at the shop. I am sure he would take your call. It would only make sense to start a thread with facts from Todd, Dan, and Softronic... rather then 2nd hand hearsay.
I emailed Todd I know the answer.

I don't know STEVO......I think it was pretty interesting.....I too was unsure who Softronic was .........there were many innuendos being dropped by Dan at Vivid that confused me even further.Dan was making it seem as though Softronic was aiding Proto in the writing of some of their software, which seemed strange because we all know Todd Knighton writes his own files. So in summary they only provide the vehicle for Proto to tune and actually develop software(tuning) for Vivid.I think??

The idea that any forum sponsor is not to be crticised in any way is ridiculous. Another current thread re GT2 for sale is also busy calling a sponsor out-- and once again -has proved beneficial to 6 speed contributors. The reality is that the internet has sped up the spread of knowledge and information to aid us all-- and any censorship would be a disservice to all.
I think some this info may be the respective companies' "trade secrets".
I may be naive, but I doubt the files are all that different from company to company. The engines still have to operate within acceptable guidelines of spark timing and A/F ratios. Is it possible to push the envelope a bit in terms of timing and A/F mixture? probably.
Here is an example: if you were to use a 640 program from one tuner and turbos from a similar kit from another will the car not run right? I really doubt it. The computer has some leeway to adjust for conditions and using the MAF, boost, temperature and O2 readings (among other things) the program will provide the appropriate fuel and timing.
Another example of this may be the fact that K16/24 hybrids can run all day long on a K24 program. Different turbos, different lag time, slightly more backpressure but very similar overall flow. The computer sees boost a little earlier in the rev range, but the map is there to provide fuel for the given boost.
I'm curious to see how a K16 program will fare with K24s or 16/24 hybrids at 1.2 BAR.

in all fairness and for argument sakes, Dan has released a rather impressive line of products in a relatively short time frame. alternatively, he has some sort of customer service and actually answers the phone!
IMO, discussions are what make a forum. I do not believe Craig had intent to undermine VR, and believe it was just and warranted.
