guys
whats going on with my clutch ?
first its slipping, then its totally fine, then slipping, then fine

i have a feeling its not the clutch itself, but maybe the pressure plate or the springs ...

is that even possible ?

Sounds like your rear main seal could possibly be leaking. A clutch doesn't grip too well with oil on it, but once you burn the oil off it's ok for a bit until it gets wet again. When do you notice it slipping most often, after the car sits for a while?

Steve-
Mine was doing the exact same thing. When I replaced it it was definitely NOT the clutch...plenty left. I thought maybe the slave had been leaking down onto it or something... but it was dry. I replaced the slave when I did the new clutch and flywheel and problem solved. It does not make sense that it would be the slave but that is what my gut feeling was....

It's your pressure plate in both your cases $ and Steve... The pressure plate is to weak to hold the force, and slips, letting the clutch slip at various times. I delt with this two weekends ago at the track with a brand new clutch/PP/LWFW. You're better off getting the 999 PP and sending it off to clutchmasters to have it heat treated. We replaced the rear main when we did the new clutch/PP/LWFW and I'm pretty confident it ain't the seal. Based on what Kevin at UMW has previously posted and what my mechanic said, it boils down to when your torque/boost hit at that "sweet spot" and over ride the job being done by the pressure plate.

Mike

Does the slipping occur when the car has been driven hard (when the components are hot)? Think of your brakes. Heavy use and they fade, once cooled off they are fine again. Are these your symptoms?

I'd say it could be any of the above..best thing to do is take it to a very good shop and discuss it/have them go at it. Regardless, just the diagnostic phase will be costly.

I would go into options up front...perhaps an expensive clutch is what you need.....

It is moments like this that I wish I had 40 hours a week free, a lift in my garage, and a lot of mechanical experience pulling engines and trannies on my own....

GT1 blocks usually don't have RMS issues, but there have been a few.
